Unofficial CD edition of this legendary 1991 debut EP by Swedish pioneers AT THE GATES, a crucial recording for understanding the birth of the Gothenburg sound and the later development of Melodic Death Metal. Recorded only a few months after the band's formation, "Gardens of Grief" presents a much darker, more chaotic and more traditional Death Metal-oriented version of the group than the one heard on their later releases.
Featuring the highly influential songwriting of guitarist Alf Svensson, the four tracks combine intricate structures, eerie atmospheres and twisted riffing that connect directly to the legacy of GROTESQUE, the previous band of several members. Far removed from the streamlined and melodic approach of "Slaughter of the Soul", this EP captures AT THE GATES at their most primitive, experimental and extreme, making it an essential chapter in the history of Swedish Death Metal.
