RecopIlación de las dos únicas demos del '90 y '91 más temas inéditos en directo de esta oscura banda española de Grind/ Death para amantes de grupos como PUNGENT STENCH, EXULCERATION, NAPALM DEATH, CARCASS, AGATHOCLES...
Es difícil encontrar bandas en España que a finales de los ochenta siguieran el carro de lo que desde fuera se estaba haciendo. Ni tan siquiera dentro del Thrash Metal teníamos una buena base de bandas, por lo que ya no digo en géneros minoritarios y en efervescencia fuera como el Grind o el Death Metal. RUIDO DE RABIA puede que fuera uno de los pioneros, pero partiendo de algo mucho más Hardcore. Más cercano a lo que CARCASS o NAPALM DEATH hacía en el Reino Unido era lo de EL KASO URKIJO. Pero aún así bandas contadas. Y una de esas era NEUNTOTER, cuya aventura dio para dos demos y algunas grabaciones hasta ahora inéditas que los archivos de Xtreem Music sacan a la luz en este compendio llamado “Stench To Stench”. Pura arqueología musical.
La base de NEUNTOTER era también muy particular pues sus letras eran una mezcla del satanismo de DEICIDE y el gore de CARCASS, de hecho su logo casi parece más el de una banda de Black Metal. Pero nada más lejos de la realidad, pues musicalmente lo suyo era puro Goregrind (sobre todo en la segunda de las demos que editaron, “Consummed In Gore”) en la vena de los primeros NAPALM DEATH y CARCASS, con algo del groove de PUNGENT STENCH. Algún ramalazo Thrash (en este caso en la primera demo, “Slaughter” también tenían). Y esa voz distorsionada tan característica que también RUIDO DE RABIA acabarían por adoptar y que más adelante TU CARNE en nuestro territorio harían suya igualmente. En cualquier caso, y aunque no es que estemos ante nada original, sí lo era el momento y el lugar en el que se hizo.
Obviamente hablamos de un par de demos, completadas con tomas en directo y un pequeño ensayo. ¿Qué significa esto? Que no busques un gran sonido en “Stench To Stench”. Pero sí algo muy decente, bien remasterizado para que no tengamos que agudizar el oído. Por producción, estilo más marcado y composiciones, la segunda de las demos aquí contenida es la que más me gusta. “Consummed In Gore” es un homenaje a NAPALM DEATH y CARCASS. De hecho hay un tema que es un homenaje al “Scum” de NAPALM DEATH, “Scumfixion”. Combinación de temas veloces, cortos y directos a la yugular, con otros “algo” más elaborados que combinan riffs groovies con ataques más Grind. Hasta espacio para temas de unos pocos segundos hay también, al más puro estilo “You Suffer” de NAPALM DEATH. Todo acompañado de un sonido podrido, con un bajo al más puro estilo MORTICIAN y la voz de Natxo absolutamente descompuesta. 26 minutos que la verdad dan mucho de sí y muestran como NEUNTOTER se podía considerar como una de las bandas más extremas de nuestro país en 1991.
En la primera demo, cronológicamente hablando, pues en el CD la han colocado a continuación puesto que su sonido es inferior y su duración también (sólo 12 minutos y dos temas con una intro). Ya tiene la voz de Natxo, aunque no tan distorsionada ni tan oscura, pues utiliza un tono más agresivo, pero está más metida en el Thrash y el Death satánico (POSSESSED, SARCOFAGO, BLASPHEMY…). No hay más que ver los títulos de los dos temas, “Slave (Under The Pentagram)” y “The Day of the Deads”. El segundo de los temas además se extiende hasta los ocho minutos, y contiene mucha lucubración y cambio de estructura por parte de Sergio, el guitarrista de NEUNTOTER. Nada que ver con el minimalismo de la siguiente demo. Para mi gusto estos temas están un poco por debajo, también porque el estilo era otro, aunque ya tuviese elementos como los después reflejados en “Consummed In Gore”.
Finalmente y como complemento, “Stench To Stench” incluye temas de dos directos y un ensayo, que aportan quince minutos más de música, incluyendo dos versiones, cómo no del “Scum” (el único tema grabado en 1991 en Navarra, con un sonido más caótico) y también del “Slowly We Rot” de OBITUARY, junto a otros cinco cortes grabados en Barcelona en 1992 poco antes de que cambiaran de nombre a DEMENTED FOETICIDE sin dejar registrado nada bajo esta rúbrica. Como el resto de ediciones de Xtreem Music de este estilo además se incluyen buenas dosis de flyers, fotos y las portadas e interiores de las demos íntegras, para que no se pierda el rigor histórico que esta compilación supone.
Está bien recordar que en España, aunque íbamos a remolque, también tuvimos pioneros de los sonidos más extremos. NEUNTOTER no fue de los primeros pero sí contribuyó a que por estos lares se tuviese conocimiento de los sonidos putrefactos que en el resto del mundo ya se gestaron hacía tiempo y estaban en pleno auge. “Stench To Stench” sirve de homenaje y pieza de coleccionista a una banda de historia breve pero mucho ruido realizado.
Compiling and releasing obscure Spanish 90’s metal on nice looking archival CDs is a fine tradition of Dave Rotten and Xtreem Music. The latest effort on this mission of cultural preservation is a disc containing the two official demos of the band Neuntoter – Slaughter from 1990 and Consummated in gore from 1991. There are also a bunch of live bonus tracks, and overall it’s a pretty massive collection of music. It was released today, and is entitled Stench to Stench.
Neuntoter, who was formed in 1988 and split up in 1993, played extremely dirty, primitive grind/death. Bands worth mentioning to give a hint of what this is about would be early Napalm Death and Carcass, though certain midpaced and slower passages recalls Swedish 90’s death metal as well. Also there’s tiny traces of punk, but not so much in the actual riffing or even attitude, but rather in the sometimes very simplistic power chord progressions.
Most songs contain similar elements – some death metal leads and/or riffs, some simpler riffing of a slightly more diffuse genre, and regular outbursts of blast beats. The latter always remain controlled, though, and there’s very little of the non-melodic noisiness of purer grindcore acts. Overall, there is a certain amateurishness, but in a good way. For quite some time now, most death metal releases tend towards cleaner sound, and they are usually preformed by bands with long experience who prioritize being tight. This time machine of recording history really offers an alternative view of what death metal can be like.
The first fifteen tracks, the full content of the Consummated in Gore demo, are the main attraction here. The older, and far shorter, Slaughter begins with the theme music from the film Reanimator, and then moves on to two tracks of what must be described as “proto-death metal”. It’s cool, and almost experimental in a weird way, but it’s not particularly good. The last 10 tracks are various live recordings, including covers of Napalm Death and Obituary. The sound quality is raw, to say the least, and there’s a lot of Spanish conversation going on near the microphone doing the recording, but it’s still interesting as historical documentation.
The project of re-releasing old Spanish extreme metal is truly a work for the benefit of posterity, and should be encouraged by all means. For example by purchasing this fascinating look into an old, Spanish death/grind band. It is available on CD from Xtreem Music’s webshop, and also for digital download from the label’s Bandcamp.

Horror movie samples start off the compilation before going into a heavier direction along with some deep yet guttural death metal growls a few seconds later and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and grindcore elements can be heard and the riffs also use a great amount of tremolo picking.
Throughout the compilation you can hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the songs also mix in a decent amount of noisecore elements along with a great portion of the tracks being short in length and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and their is also a brief use of ritualistic sounds before returning back to a heavier direction and the also bring in a covers of Naplam Death's "Scum" and Obituary's "Slowly We Rot" as well as a great amount of live tracks and there is also a brief use of melodic guitar leads. and clean playing and one of the tracks is very long and epic in length.
Neuntoter played a musical style that mixes death metal, g rind and noisecore to create something very extreme for their time, the production sound s very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover gore, Subnormal Words and Satanism themes.
In my opinion Neuntoter where a very great sounding mixture of death metal, grind and noisecore and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band.
