Solida aunque escueta, esta carta de presentación de los húngaros de COFFINBORN, un lanzamiento que Xtreem Music entrega a los fans del más acérrimo Death Metal casi como una ofrenda donde, musicalmente, todo es 100 % disfrutable.
Este MCD contiene cuatro canciones simples, pero densas, potentes, que ganan por peso propio, por contundencia. El trio compuesto por Blasphemy (voz, batería), Churchburner (guitarra) y Disgusted (guitarra y vos) no deja títere con cabeza y a lo largo de este material deja por sentado que los principios no se negocian.
Con miembros de bandas como MÖRBID CARNAGE y GRAVECRUSHER, COFFINBORN expone cuatro canciones plagadas de clichés deathmetaleros pero también de una denotada ardua labor en el estudio y la sala de ensayo.
“Beneath the Cemetery” es un homenaje a los viejos tiempos, no quedan dudas, puesto que en los principios de la década del noventa se pone énfasis y de ahí no se mueve ni un centímetro la composición.
“Enter The Nightmares of Horror”, el genial “Beneath the Cemetery” (a medio tiempo pero súper pesado) y “Putrid Stench of Death” son de lo mejor, es decir, casi todo el contenido del CD es mas que bueno.
Un material más que equilibrado, sólido y para nada complaciente: nada de modernidad, ni artilugios enroscados; solamente Death Metal de la vieja guardia. Gran descubrimiento de Xtreem Music…
Proveniente de las lejanas tierras húngaras, debutó este año CoffinBorn, agrupación formada por los integrantes de las bandas Gravecrusher y Mörbid Carnage, con un crudo y pútrido EP, llamado Beneath the Cemetery.
El EP contiene cuatro canciones. Death metal lleno de riffs crudos, densos y oscuros, con una sugestiva influencia de bandas como Autopsy y Asphyx, ideal para los amantes del death metal old school.
El álbum comienza de manera directa y sin preámbulos con el tema “Enter the Nightmares of Horror”, el cual, con un golpe lleno de brutalidad y a pesar de tener ciertos toques del death metal old school, no parece en su totalidad una “emulación” del sonido utilizado 25 años atrás. Más bien busca el camino del mismo, pero con una calidad superior y más trabajada, que convoca a un mosh que fácilmente podría convertirse en un sanguinario pozo, con cortes parecidos a “War Ensemble” de Slayer.
Continuando el desentierro de cadáveres, emerge una tierra más firme y lenta (al principio), densa y pesada. La canción “Beneath the Cemetery”, a pesar de su oscuro y en cierto modo pausado inicio, no duda en mostrar riffs en los que el death metal se hace mucho más patente. En cuanto al peso de sus riffs recuerda a Incantation y sus cambios de velocidad rememoran al viejo Death.
La penúltima muestra de este tour por el subsuelo del cementerio es “Putrid Stench of Death”, canción en la que dominan los tiempos pesados, lentos y extensos, con mucho “palm mute”,4 y en la que solo se otorga un breve espacio para ejercer velocidad y un paso para un solo de guitarra. En el paladar queda el gusto de Dismember y Asphyx. A diferencia de los demás temas del EP, el diagrama obtenido es un tema lento y oscuro.
Como golpe final asesta “Corpse Collector”, un tema que desde el principio recuerda al primer LP de Incantation: Onward to Golgotha (1992). A diferencia de la canción anterior, la estructura de “Corpse Collector” está hecha para resaltar las guitarras y la voz. Se trata, sin duda alguna, de la canción más brutal de Beneath the Cemetery, con solos estilo Slayer, riffs cargados de odio y baterías con marcha de blast beat, lo que en su conjunto muestra como axioma la buena composición y capacidad de CoffinBorn.
Como síntesis, CoffinBorn deja un EP exquisito, sobre todo para los amantes del death metal old school e incluso del death thrash metal, con voces guturales rasgadas, guitarras esquizofrénicas y variaciones de velocidad y composición, con un sonido avasallador, sucio y sombrío.
Nota aparte: el arte de Beneath the Cemetery estuvo a cargo del gran Mark Riddick, quien ha trabajado con bandas del calibre de Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Aborted, Devourment, entre otras.
Do you, my dear nephews and nieces, know that clear idea when you hear a band, and even being nothing new in terms of music, you like a lot of its work, and have to pay some respect to it?
Yes, this is the clear feeling that happened when Ol’ Big Daddy here heard Hungarian trio, COFFINBORN’s first release, the EP “Beneath the Cemetery”. It’s nothing new, just that Death Metal from the 90s, taking great part of their inspiration from bands like DISMEMBER, old ENTOMBED, CANCER, GRAVE, and some bits from first and seminal works from DEATH (especially “Scream Bloody Gore” era). But there’s something in this trio that’s different; they’re not a clone, and even playing an eroded style, it seems that they have something more that only a word can explain: spirit.
Low grunt vocals, distorted and catching guitar riffs, bass and drums heavy and not making such complicated music, sometimes more fast and aggressive, sometimes slower and bitter, but always good. These guys really have guts!
The sound quality leads to a middle term between Swedish Death Metal earlier works (for the jigsaw guitars), but the deeper and raw sounding from earlier Florida bands (especially from DEATH and first MORBID ANGEL), but this is one of their strong points, for this quality is the essence of their sound. Could be a little better, but it’s good for now.
Four destructive and aggressive songs only, unfortunately (could be more): The harsh and fast torpedoes, “Enter the Nightmares of Horror” (very good riffs and vocals), and “Beneath the Cemetery” (this one with some abrasive guitars in the middle of sound mass and great drums, and some slower moments), and “Corpse Collector” (some influences of earlier Thrash Metal appear, maybe some influence from POSSESSED on “Seven Churches” time). But “Putrid Stench of Death” is a catchy and violent slow song, with great vocals and abrasive riffs, maybe the EP’s best song.
Nothing new at all, but hope they’ll come back soon to our delight!

This is Old-School Death Metal through and through. The band rip, tear and shred through these 4 tracks with morbid fervour.
This is rotten, stinking Death Metal that’s clawed its way out of the depths of the foetid crypt in search of brains and fresh body parts.
Cavernous vocals fill the air and one can almost imagine some ravenous, giant maw being opened ready to suck in all light and matter.
The dirty, filthy sound they have fits the music perfectly and the tracks pummel and bash with pleasing brutality.
Some good riffs and melodies stick out and there’s a good chug and groove in parts.
Mixing elements of the Old-School from bands such as Autopsy, Dismember, Incantation and Death; Coffinborn’s Classic Death Metal is played well and with good songs.
There are only 4 tracks on this EP but at just under 21 minutes in length it’s a good hit of Death Metal for Old-School fans. This is a very enjoyable release that promises good things for the future of this band.

Four songs into their career, Coffinborn are off to a great start. Their crunchy and distinctly evil brand of death metal slaughter is the kind of thing that immediately strikes you below the belt, leaving you doubled over, in awe of the primal heaviness of a band who get the wonderfully destructive and violent nature of the genre. The distinctive trudge of Coffinborn leaves the band at a distinct advantage over their peers, though their sound is clearly old school it's still a blast to listen too. The growls here are deliciously primal, it leaves you with a hefty bottom end that is easy to underestimate. The speed of these songs is also impressive, for example when the speedy blast beats kick in on Putrid Stench of Death you start to get a sense for the glorious and destructive nature of the Coffinborn sound. The way they contrast fast and slow is simply a joy to listen too, and leaves me in awe of their new EP, Beneath the Cemetery.
Coffinborn are a band from Hungary that plays a very old school form of death metal and this is a review of their 2014 ep "Beneath the Cemetery" which was released by Xtreem Music.
A very dark, raw and old school death metal sound starts off the ep along with some blast beats and growls and you can also hear some morbid sounding early 90's Swedish style melodies in their musical sound along with a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the ep sounds like it could of been released in 1991.
When solos are added into the music they enhance the chaotic classic death metal feeling this band creates with their musical sound and the band also brings in a decent mixture of Swedish, Finnish and American influences into their songs along with a very evil sounding atmosphere and the band ignores all of the modern trends that have been a part of death metal for the past 20 years as well as staying heavy from beginning to end of the recording.
Coffinborn are another younger band that plays an ancient style of death metal and while the music is not completely original it is still very enjoyable and a perfect throwback to death metal's glory days, the production sounds very raw, heavy and old school while the lyrics cover death and gore themes.
In my opinion Coffinborn are a very great sounding old school death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Enter the Nightmares" and "Putrid Stench Of Death".
COFFINBORN is a quite new Hungarian entity, sporting a couple of members from MÖRBID CARNAGE, a thrashing band I think I have enjoyed in the past. This band isn't about Thrash, though, good old and dusty Death Metal done the brutal way is what they are up to. A good universal mix of old school European and American Death Metal as we have heard it a thousand times before, I don't think these guys will shed a tear, if I claimed that they have a couple of the early Death Metal classics in their collection. Good downtuned, midpaced dark atmospheric Death Metal, with a section here and there with a little more speed to it, are what we are talking about. The trio delivers their gore-ridden Death Metal in a manner that'll speak to most fanatics of this kind of music, there's nothing new, nothing fancy or anything else about this EP, besides well written and well played Death Metal, we have heard it all many times before, though there are intensity and soul to this release. It won't become a classic, I might even not play it many times, when done with this review, though an easily enjoyable treat that deservers a little headbanging, as we speak.
Zaledwie kilka dni temu prezentowałem świetny materiał węgierskiej formacji Gravecrusher, a już na tapecie mam debiutancką epkę ichnich ziomków z Coffinborn. Przypadek? Nie sądzę, ponieważ obydwa zespoły są powiązane ze sobą personalnie, a ponadto pochodzą z miejscowości Szeged, które zdaje się być zagłębiem tamtejszego oldschoolowego death metalowego podziemia. No cóż, mając na uwadze tyle „zbiegów okoliczności” kontrakt ze Zgniłkiem raczej nie jest przypadkiem, tylko oczywistą formalnością. I bardzo dobrze, albowiem takich materiałów nie odkłada się do szuflady.
Miałem tę przyjemność, że o Coffinborn wiedziałem długo przed premierą „Beneath The Cemetery”, więc wiedziałem doskonale co wisi w powietrzu i tylko czekałem na oficjalne objawienie studyjnej produkcji. Jestem nią w pełni usatysfakcjonowany i chociaż to tylko cztery kawałki, ale za to wystarczająco treściwe, aby konkretnie zryć mój czerep. Znakomicie przyszykowany zatęchły death metal oparty na najbardziej klasycznych wzorcach pokroju Autopsy, wczesnego Death, Massacre czy Asphyx może nie zaskakuje oryginalnością, lecz jebał to pies, skoro brzmi kurewsko świeżo i niemiłosiernie kopie dupsko. Coffinborn prezentuje optymalny recept na śmierć metal najlepszego sortu - organiczny, esencjonalny, odpychający, atawistyczny i przede wszystkim do bólu szczery.
Dwudziestominutowy skomasowany atak poszczególnych instrumentów wspieranych przez bezkompromisowy wokal mogą odeprzeć chyba tylko najbardziej wprawieni w bojach maniacy. Podjąłem rękawicę i nie żałuję, bo chociaż zebrałem srogie cięgi, radości i przyjemności z ich przyjmowania miałem co nie miara. Jak powiadają starzy sadomasochiści – tak mi rób, tak mi dobrze.
In the previous edition I reviewed the Mcd of Hungary's Gravecrusher. Guitarist Diguster of that band is also active in Coffinborn. In this act he also takes care of the vocals next to the guitars.
'Beneath The Cemetery' is Coffinborn's first release and contains four songs. I would describe their style as filthy sounding old-school death metal. Especially the guitars sound rotten, which only adds to the overall result. References you could drop when it comes to Coffinborn are Asphyx, Massacre and a little bit of Death. So, a fine recording and it's a shame it's done after twenty minutes. Fans of oldschool death metal definitely should check this out. I think they will like it.
Featuring members of such bands as Morbid Carnage and Gravecrusher, Coffinborn is one of the latest Hungarian death metal exports, and this year sees the release of their debut dosage of filthiness under Xtreem Music. With myself being very much a fan of Morbid Carnage‘s addictive and energetic style of thrash metal, it left me with rather high hopes of their death metal project, and looking at the rather enchanting artwork, one instinctively knows what is in place for them on this short 4-track EP.
The first riffs of Churchburner and Disguster leaves one in eager anticipation, and as soon as the first hit on the skins by Blasphemy, all hell break loose and one is thrown into a wall of noise, a style that is rather reminiscent of such bands as Rottrevore and Putrevore in the relentless aggression that is presented by the band, along with the rather abrasive tone of the guitars. It certainly helps that Blasphemy’s drumming often alternates between your usual blasting style and one that is more simplistic and d-beat driven, helping to give the music of Coffinborn a rather Swedish death ‘n’ roll feel, and an early-Autopsy reminder at times. The groove on title track Beneath the Cemetery provides a nice opportunity to start a pit and just mosh the fuck out.
That said, the band does not just indulge in mindless speed and chaos, as tracks such as Putrid Stench of Death puts in a slightly doomish element into their songwriting. As though the style of death metal that Coffinborn plays in weren’t filthy and disgusting enough, the slow pace that the band goes at on this track leaves one feeling rather disturbed and unsettled, reminding one of the works of bands like Asphyx or later Grave material.
Coffinborn‘s debut is a nice compilation of the various old school death metal genres that we have come to love and revere over the years, and while in recent times such similar-sounding releases have been common, Coffinborn‘s onslaught manages to leave one constantly at the edge of his seat, awaiting the next round of aural abuse.
Excelente MCD que nos traen los deathers húngaros COFFINBORN, a modo de debut, de la mano de Xtreem Music y a punto de editarse oficialmente. Sus componentes provienen de bandas como MÖRBID CARNAGE (principalmente) o GRAVECRUSHER, con quienes comparten prácticamente fecha de nacimiento. “Beneath the Cemetery” es un homenaje a los viejos tiempos, hecho que sin ser especialmente relevante en cuanto a definir la calidad, sí es un indicativo para comprobar hacia dónde van los tiros.
El trabajo consta de buena producción, muy adecuada a las circunstancias. Y Hay algo que me parece importante señalar: simula ciertos aspectos de las mezclas Old School pero no trata de parecer un disco de hace 25 años. Digo esto porque hay bandas casi noveles a las que esto les sale muy bien (RUDE, DEROGATORY), aunque es la tremenda fuerza o la salvaje espontaneidad que conlleva una incipiente juventud lo que ayuda a hacerlo tan creíble o apropiado, dando el pego aunque parezcan tener poca personalidad, por el momento. Sin embargo, no siempre funciona, porque de alguna manera hay que creérselo, incluso no haber tenido tiempo de “evolucionar”. En COFFINBORN, hablamos de músicos más rodados (independientemente de los niveles individuales), y posiblemente haciendo voluntarias concesiones, dado su principal objetivo y la clara línea a seguir. Respecto al resultado sonoro, puede decirse que han sabido conferir un punto ideal entre lo actual y la onda clásica, con mucho poso mortifero, moho y gran pegada.
La voz es pútrida, ahogada y cavernosa. No ejerce un primerísimo plano aunque cuenta con ciertos momentos y pasajes en los que necesariamente destaca por proyectarse de diferente manera. Las guitarras suenan muy bien, atravesando carne y hueso, sobre todo cuando la percusión está menos presente o en la marcas y cortes. El bajo trabaja a caballo entre los riffs y la batería, con un grueso sonido apianado, definido y espeluznante, otorgando un ambiente tétrico y confiriendo indudable peso al conjunto. En general, suena todo de forma inteligente: ni hay excesos ni se dejan nada en el tintero. 20 minutos de tralla condensada, sin preámbulos
Por otro lado está el arte gráfico, firmado por Marc Riddick. La portada hace juego con la música, en el estilo blanco/negro y mostrando esa sobria y graciosa expresividad que el dibujante sabe imprimir a la muerte en forma de vida. Una escena macabramente perfecta y muy bien enmarcada a través de su propio diseño, cual herramienta de acabado estético y mediante la simetría de las calaveras en los vértices del cuadro, confiriendo un guiño al asunto. El Artwork al completo se basa en elementos individuales de la propia escena principal, potenciándolos por separado y además logrando que dibujos y canciones encajen como anillo al dedo, o mejor dicho, como muerto al ataúd.
“Enter the Nightmares of Horror” se introduce sin ceremonias. Death Metal corrosivo y directo al cuello, bastante orgánico a pesar de la potente mezcla. Riffs trémolo, cortes ochenteros tipo “War Ensemble” y pasajes rompedores.
“Beneath the Cemetery” cambia los planteamientos anteriores, machacando con el bordón en medio tiempo, con afiladísimas guitarras y un bajo que penetra hasta la médula. No tarda en adoptar la vía rápida.
“Putrid Stench of Death” es, un pesado track en el que predominan los tiempos lentos y arrastrados, tanto con palm mute como con notas abiertas, incluso largos y densos acordes, todo bien intercalado y añadiendo partes veloces sobre las que se desgrana un brevísimo y esquizofrénico solo de guitarra. Buen contrapunto para un momento clave en el recorrido del disco.
“Corpse Collector” entra a romper, y teniendo en cuenta que cierra la obra es una baza fundamental, porque deja buen sabor de boca y el listón muy alto. De nuevo aires rápidos y diferentes formas de trabajar las partes, mezclados con sabores INCANTATION y AUTOPSY. Las guitarras y la voz son protagonistas, abarcando diferentes técnicas y formas de expresión que a su vez flotan sobre unas bases rítmicas demenciales, por momentos. Esta es la descarga más brutal del trabajo, un diamante en bruto que bien vale la pena escuchar con detenimiento.
Lo bueno de estas cuatro canciones es que producen un resultado muy bien compensado respecto a estilos y tempo: más vale poco y bueno que mucho y repetitivo. La banda ha sabido condensar sus ideas en un grado bastante equilibrado, con un track list que mantiene el interés in crescendo y con la variedad musical suficiente. Sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que ejercen el viejo estilo Death Metal corrosivo y de raíz que mezcla la vertiente americana y europea a partes iguales, y que a pesar de sus respectivas características innatas conlleva ciertos elementos y ritmos que son casi imposibles de eludir, más bien todo lo contrario. Buena nota para COFFINBORN y su “Beneath the Cemetery”, un trabajo generosamente escueto pero intenso, y que sin duda merece la pena adquirir en formato circular y tangible.
