Finlandia siempre ha sido factoría de buenas bandas de Death Metal, pero ha tenido que ser un tío proveniente de El Salvador (aunque afincado en Helsinki), el responsable de crear la más brutal formación surgida de aquellas gélidas tierras.
Ayudado por otros dos miembros de origen latino (Brasil), KATAPLEXIA se establece, con éste segundo álbum, como uno de los máximos exponentes europeos del brutal Death Metal en la más tradicional línea de bandas como SUFFOCATION, PYREXIA, DISAVOWED, CHRIST DENIED...
“Catastrophic Scenes” sin duda hará las delicias de cualquier fan ávido de blast beats y voces guturales al más puro estilo americano.
I’ve had a good time reviewing the latest batch of promos from Xtreem Music and KATAPLEXIA’s “Catastrophic Scenes” further solidifies the preceding statement. It’s true that the Finnish three-piece aren’t churning out the originality or innovativeness of, say, CROTCHDUSTER for instance. But, “Catastrophic Scenes” is yet another oasis in the desert of Brutal Death Metal.
Similar to their peers, KATAPLEXIA were evidently not shooting for the forty or fifty-minute mark as far as album length is concerned and the fact that this record is only twenty-five minutes long is the overwhelming detractor. Can I recommend paying full price for something that racks up less time than some EP’s or singles even? Well, yes and no. Trouncing through “Infested Wounds” and “Ashes From Our Incinerated Innards” will give you an unabashed glimpse into all that “Catastrophic Scenes” possesses. Naturally, as is the norm for bands that dabble in this particular subgenre, the players are well endowed – musically speaking. And, the disc is overall a very enjoyable outing that was seemingly mixed/mastered properly; therefore it subsequently boasts a beefy sound that emanates intended brutality. Predominantly, the unearthed compositions are three to four minutes in length with the exception of the closer named “Scenes of Tragedies,” but there are only seven tracks ripe for perusal, which again factors into the album’s inadequate length.
Brutal Death Metal aficionados will find plenty to like with the latest KATAPLEXIA and I found myself jovially absorbing “Catastrophic Scenes.” If you can find it in your heart to disregard the total length, then you’re a better (read: less picky) man than I. Nevertheless, this is yet another solid entry by Xtreem Music and one I know I’ll be listening to repeatedly.
Kataplexia got its start in the brain of Rodrigo Artiga (of Deep Red) back in El Salvador in 2002. He made the band a reality in Finland the following year with the album Morgue's Reality. Now with two more members (recruited from Brazil), they’ve signed to Dave Rotten's (Avulsed) label, Xtreem Music.
Their new album, Catastrophic Scenes, was a pleasant surprise. Their sound is more reminiscent of the American brutal death scene, belying their South American roots and Scandinavian locale, very similar to Brodequin but with better vocals and cleaner production. The sound on the album is great; churning, dense guitar work that isn't simply the same chugga-chugga riff throughout, but the bass is a bit buried behind everything else that's going on. The drumming is fast and technical but has that hollow donk-donk-donk sound that Brodequin is now known for. The vocals are great here – thick, guttural, "punch someone in the street for absolutely no reason other than the music is so brutal" type of growls. What's particularly impressive is that these awesome vocals are done by Artiga, who is also the drummer. How someone could keep up that kind of drumming AND pay attention to keeping his growls that growly is beyond me, but somebody buy that man a beer.
Overall, it's a great effort. Nothing new or original to be heard here, not absolutely essential but if you're a fan of American-style brutal death, most definitely worth the time and money.

Music: Kataplexia. From one of the heads of Deepred and Kabak, Rodrigo, gives us the second release of the band. If in the first one, he played all the instruments, now the band is complete and can develop a brutal death as it must be: fast, raw and brutal!
The influences are clear: Pyaemia, Disavowed and Suffocation. From this three brutal as fuck bands, Kataplexia adds their best to provide a cult brutal album. if you don't beleive me, just time will tell! Music is direct, impactating, complex in the exact way, having all the riffs clear. Also production and sound is cool, so on Suffocation's way. You will find a lot of european influences but also some american...a perfect fussion!

Estamos ante una nueva banda finlandesa cuyo estilo, sin embargo, nada tiene que ver con la música característica que nos brindan habitualmente los habitantes de la tierra de los mil lagos. KATAPLEXIA beben más de las tendencias puramente norteamericanas y concretamente de la escena de Nueva York. Es decir, que las influencias de los dioses SUFFOCATION y PYREXIA son más que evidentes. Puro Brutal Death americano de la costa este. Si os suena raro el que una banda nórdica esté compuesta de nombres tan latinos, es porque sus componentes no son originarios precisamente de las gélidas tierras del norte de Europa, sino más bien de lugares como El Salvador o Brasil.
Tienen a sus espaldas un primer disco tendente hacia un estilo mucho más brutal, menos pegadizo y más técnico que este "Catastrophic Scenes", dónde Rodrigo, líder absoluto de la banda, lo grabó todo, sin apoyo de ningún otro músico. No fue hasta el año pasado en que decidió reclutar a sus compañeros brasileños para dar vida real a una banda que sino estaría destinada de por vida al estudio. La evolución es más que evidente: sonido más accesible, pero no por ello menos técnico.
Es precisamente en el sonido y en la fabulosa producción, dónde se encuentra el punto fuerte de este grupo. Pesado, grave y enfermizo, quizás más opaco que en SUFFOCATION. El bajo sobredimensionado impregna todo el disco y nos hace retumbar las entrañas, junto a una batería aplastante a la que se le oye todo (no en vano, que el compositor y líder de la banda sea el batería supongo que algo ha tenido que ver en esto). Por su parte las guitarras tejen una maraña de buenos riffs, técnicos, variados y pegadizos en muchas ocasiones.
Ante estas descripciones muchos pensarán que la originalidad de este grupo es nula. Pues bien, desde luego no dicen nada nuevo, y con las referencias de las que beben, tan tralladas en grupos actuales, tampoco se da pie a nada sorprendente. Pero esto no impide que el disco, con una selección de temas bien cuidada, nos deje indiferentes. Lo que hacen lo hacen muy bien, de eso no cabe duda, y siempre hay cabida para nuevos parámetros y nuevas formas de entender un género muy en boga últimamente.
Temas destacables de entre los siete de los que dispone el álbum: me quedaría ante todo con "Devastating War", que junto a "Ashes From Our Incinerated Innards", presentan un registro de voz más gutural que en el resto del disco, con un regustillo menos hardcore, lo que hace que las influencias de PYREXIA sean olvidadas durante unos instantes y vengan a nuestra mente grupos más cercanos al Grind, como los mexicanos DISGORGE. En cuanto a brillantez en la ejecución no se puede olvidar el magnífico "From The Debris", con una batería increíble, llena de elementos y variedad de ritmos. En el resto de un disco excesivamente corto para mi gusto, se entrelazan una y otra vez riffs pegadizos y técnicos al mismo tiempo con constantes cambios de ritmo.
En consecuencia, un buen grupo de Brutal Death americano, que aunque no es para tirar cohetes no defraudará a nadie. Como extra, incluye un video del tema "Brutal Addiction" en dónde el sirope de fresa fluye que da gusto.
This act is based in Finland but only have Latin American members. The style is not exactly geographically tied to neither the member's location nor their ethnicity though. The basic influences can be found stateside in the shape of both old brutality merchants such as Cannibal Corpse or Internal Bleeding as well as in newer ultra-brutal acts (no point in naming any as most of them all sound the same). The music could be described as an updated version of old school brutal death metal whereas the vocals are in the newer pig/frog vein. It all remind me a bit of how Greek Inveracity play, but with worse vocals. It's ok stuff musically but the vocal style used prevents me from liking it that much personally.
