1er álbum de ésta banda danesa de ultra-pesado Death Metal con influencias en plan ROTTREVORE, MYTHIC, primerísimos GRAVE, CREMATORY (swe), AUTOPSY, INCANTATION, MORTICIAN... Una de las mejores nuevas bandas durante el 2010 en su género!!
Que rápido pasa el tiempo o que lentos que somos algunos... Hace unos días publicábamos en nuestra tercer revista la entrevista con David Torturdöd en la cual hablábamos del primer disco y ahora ya está el segundo LP en la calle. Y que alegría es tenerlos de nuevo rotando en el stereo de casa! El primer disco "Indhentet af Døden" me había volado la capucheta y es por eso que esperaba ansiosamente este nuevo trabajo.
Ya conocía parte del mismo porque me había comprado el casette de adelanto que contenía dos temas de este trabajo. Esos dos temas seguían bastante la linea del debut y por eso pensaba que la cosa iba en esa dirección. Pero una vez escuchado este nuevo LP tengo que decir que encuentro algunas diferencias con respecto a aquél material. El disco comienza con "Opløste Ådsler", un tema mucho más lento a lo que nos tenían acostumbrado. Si se quiere menos explosivo pero para eso mucho más profundo. En este tema ya se nota lo que en el resto del material y una vez finalizado el disco queda muy claro: la banda ha mejorado muchísimo la armonía interna, se nota claramente que están mucho más aceitados entre si. Y eso siempre es muy bueno para el producto final. Temas como "Stranguleret", con su excepcional intro, "Ormeorgie" o "Til Doden Os Skiller" son realmente brutales y hacen recordar constantemente a aquél ROTTREVORE, INCANTATION o AUTOPSY de antaño. Inclusive el cierre instrumental con "Kadavermarch" (no hace falta saber danés para entender ese genial título) está muy bien logrado con algunos pasajes muy contundentes.
La producción sigue siendo excelente. Un sonido muy putrefacto y cavernoso. Las intros son geniales, la voz de Torturdöd es excelsa, el trabajo de Anders Dödshjælp detrás de los parches es cada vez mejor y los riffs de Ondsind se escuchan mejor que el primer trabajo. Y entonces ¿por qué eligiría su primer trabajo por encima de este si tengo que decidirme por uno solo? Porque el primero simplemente es adictivo de pies a cabeza. Este, como ya decía antes, es tal vez menos explosivo y menos pegadizo. Pero por nada del planeta es peor que el anterior. Esta banda ya ha dejado de ser un simple secreto dentro del Underground para transformarse en una de las bandas que se ha subido a su trono. Así que si querés escuchar buen Death Metal, podrido y furioso como debe ser, entonces no comprés giladas e invertí tu dinero en este disco. Altamente recomendable.
Imagínate el material más denso que conozcas, como por ejemplo un vasta y profunda ciénaga de petróleo o plomo líquido candente, tu imagínate por un momento que estas dentro, lo primero que intentas es moverte con libertad, enseguida te darás cuenta que cada vez es más difícil mover cualquiera de tus extremidades, la solidez de la materia es tal, que su espesor te supera y te atrapa, así es la música de UNDERGANG, Death Metal denso y espeso, a la vez que brutal y tosco, una bestialidad sonora inhumana.
Es alucinante como solo tres tíos pueden transmitir en tan solo 8 canciones, tanta fuerza, desarrollando un sonido súper denso, que se envuelve en sí mismo con una crudeza opresiva peligrosa, su sonido es totalmente analógico, está cercano al vinilo, como si no se hubieran utilizado filtros digitales para limpiar su música, está todo tal cual, como salido del local de ensayo, con unas guitarras pesadamente distorsionadas y subafinadas.
La parte vocal que en este caso corresponde a David Torturdöd (siendo también la única guitarra de UNDERGANG), se caracteriza por unas voces guturales profundas e impronunciables, que junto a una batería descomunal y aplastante, con un juego de doble bombo característico pero endiablado e incansable, cierra el círculo haciendo que el tono de la batería contraste con el del bajo y la guitarra, al contrario que estos dos, la percusión tiene un sonido nítido y transparente, un contraste que enrique cada tema de forma notable.
El bajo adquiere mucho protagonismo en sus canciones, rellenado perfectamente el hueco que sin duda deja la falta de otra guitarra, es algo así como el bajo de PUNGENT STENCH en el mítico e inigualable “For God Your Soul... For Me Your Flesh”, estamos hablando de una comparación en cuanto a presencia de bajo y sonidos densos, puesto que sus músicas son bastante diferentes, en cuanto a términos estilístico, por supuesto todo queda dentro de la gran familia del Death Metal.
Pero UNDERGANG cuentan con una habilidad y competencia propias, que no necesitan ser comparados con nadie, al contrario, ellos solitos están creando escuela y eso tal y como está el patio hoy día es algo grande, con tanto niñato guaperas, que va de “sobrao” en cuanto a técnica y medios, pero que a la hora de hacer auténtica música, entre otras cosas, no sabe ni por dónde anda.
Solo tienes que pararte a escuchar “Dodshymne”, para darte cuenta de su potencial, de como un simple riff de guitarra acompañado de una batería y un bajo, junto con esa voz abismal, te hacen prestar atención desde el primer toque. Canciones como “Tvangstanker” son las que te hacen ver las cosas de otra manera, tu percepción de Death Metal como música brutal y extrema cambia radicalmente.
Ese riff de entrada de “Forkullede Rester” (mi canción favorita sin duda) a lo BOLT THROWER, acompañado de ese bajo que te hace saltar los empastes, como si fuera un martillo sobre un yunque, hace que “Indhentet Af Døden” sea un álbum imprescindible en tu discografía personal, catapultando a UNDERGANG al universo de los grandes maestros dentro y fuera del género.
This album from Danish heavy-weights UNDERGANG has already been released on LP in January 2010 by UK label Me Saco Un Ojo Records (sold out by now) and now finally it is also out on CD through Xtreem Music. And let me tell you, this is a real gem that's not so easy to find nowadays. UNDERGANG deliver ultra heavy Death Metal in the best traditions of SUFFOCATION (old), ROTTREVORE, (old) CARCASS, AUTOPSY and such like with their own twist and a huge splash of sludge. The sound is chokingly fat, low and murky, yet all instruments are quite clear, vocals are used more like an instrument too, low gurgling growls perfectly add to the deadly atmosphere. There are enough tempo changes and variations to keep the whole album dynamic, mostly ranging from mid-tempo to slow, but the drummer goes crazy on occasions too. Still the ultra heavy Death riffs rule supreme here and what fuckin riffs!! These guys obviously know what they do, everything is very well presented, down to the cover art (killer!!) and logo, and with punishingly heavy sound this might be one of the best oldschool Death Metal albums of the year. Even though all lyrics are in Danish it doesn't really matter, coz you wouldn't be able to discern a word here, but that doesn't take anything from the whole experience. Many bands try to emulate old masters and even old masters themselves fail to achieve such mindblowing results on their newer records, but UNDERGANG hit it right where it counts and at 32 minutes "Indhentet Af Døden" ("Caught By Death") is set to become one the genre's classics. Very highly recommended!
Para los amantes del sonido death metal underground y de factura clásico, el oír el trabajo de estos Undergang sonará a verdadera gloria, emergiendo de las profundidades del averno con un discazo como es este “Indhentet af Doden” que contiene todos los elementos básicos para provocar una masacre de proporciones épicas, con un sonido adscrito a sus influencias noventeras del tipo primero Mortician, Incantation, Morgoth, primeros Unleashed y Grotesque. No me cabe ninguna duda que esta gente ha crecido escuchando los grandes clásicos del género y eso se ha traslucido en la mejor de las formas en este album, logrando una placa que tiene momentos con muchas aristas, a ratos veloces y despiadados como en la partida, a veces más densos y a medio tiempo, casi rozando el doom, pero siempre con la malicia propia de los que saben.
La banda es originaria de Dinamarca y está conformada por Torturdöd en vocales (muy a lo Mortician), Ondsind al bajo y Dödshjælp en batería. Si lo que buscas por lo mismo es death metal que colme todas tus expectativas de brutalidad y destripadero a destajo esta banda te dará la oportunidad adecuada de echar un vistazo atrás en la escena imperante hace veinte años, técnica e instrumental nos recuerdan a toda esa pilastra de agrupaciones imperantes en esos años, con un bajo profundo y unos riffs realmente aplastantes en cada track, entre los cuales destacamos ampliamente la entrada triunfal con “Dodshymne” o el bestial “Opslugt af Morket” con unas guitarras cabezonas y cenagosas que te harás mover el cuello como por arte de magia (negra por supuesto). También destacan las melodías decadentes de “Evigt Lidende” o el diabólico “Tvanstanker”, un medio tiempo inicial que termina por romperse en una cadena de blastbeats algo más acelerados y de ideas intensamente mosheras. Un album que como decíamos, gustará a los más exigentes amantes del metal de la muerte, aquellos que sobre todo creen que el death metal debe seguir sonando como lo patentaron los primeros cultores del género, sin artilugios ni agregados extraños de ninguna clase. Un verdadero puñetazo en la cara a las hordas deathcoretas que saturan el panorama brutal de hoy en día.
Nada menos que desde Copenhague nos llega una de las mejores demos que se han podido grabar en 2009 (sino la mejor) en lo que a Brutal Death Metal se refiere. Xtreemmusic se ha encargado de reeditar esta joya tras varios retrasos de diseño y relacionados con la vida privada del grupo, y hay que decir que la cosa no se queda en motivos estéticos como el impresionante logo, la excelente portada, o la utilización del danés en sus letras… En mi opinión, UNDERGANG son frente a ROTTREVORE, lo que FUNEBRE a RIPIKOULU, una propuesta alucinante cuyos enfoques instrumentales han respetado plenamente a una versión original, y que posteriormente han sabido desarrollar y mejorar en su justa medida cuando les ha llegado el turno, para ofrecer una grabación más contundente si cabe, con mucha más fuerza rítmica, y un sonido crudo y hermético que enloquecerá a cualquier old school de turno.
Pero que coño, es suficiente escuchar los primeros riffs de “Dødshymne”, para que te des cuenta de que esta banda es algo único. El contundente sonido de bajo, las oscurísimas líneas de cuerda, la profunda y feroz percusión, y la cavernosa y monstruosa garganta de Torturdöd... sin duda algo así es lo que necesitaba la escena de una jodida vez!! Ni siquiera EVISCIUM han conseguido algo de esta índole.
Adentrándome un poco más en las estructuras, decir que UNDERGANG es una banda que sorprende en primer lugar por una rítmica controlada, cuidada y llena de detalles, quizá por ello sus canciones son realmente pegadizas, y lo mejor de todo es que gracias al abrumador sonido la brutalidad no desaparece en ningún solo momento. Junto a ello la alternancia de medios tiempos unidos a pasajes veloces, y segundos en los que el bajo se queda solo haciendo de las suyas, han contribuido a una dinámica persistente muy visible en el corte “Tvangstanker”, aventurándose además con elementos acústicos en la breve instrumental “De Dødes Passaje”. Sin embargo mi canción preferida ha sido “Indhentet Af Døden” con un final apoteósico.
Por cierto, aunque se trate de una maqueta, el trabajo se divide en ocho piezas alcanzando una duración de nada menos que treinta y dos minutos!!. Una joya si bien no respecto a temporalidad, en lo que a contenido se refiere que por supuesto, es lo más importante!!.
En una reducida formación de trío y desde la nórdica Dinamarca se presentan UNDERGANG, banda practicante de un Death Metal anclado en la old school aunque sin dar la espalda a otras corrientes como el Grindcore e incluso el Sludge.
Originalmente "Indhentet Af Døden" fue autoeditado en formato casete, constituyendo a principios de 2010 la segunda referencia del sello británico Me Saco Un Ojo, publicándose sólo en vinilo limitado a 500 copias, 100 de ellas en color marrón y el resto en color negro.
Denso y pesado es "Indhentet Af Døden", elevando además ambos términos a su máximo exponente. Denso en la atmósfera que genera la ejecución de las piezas; pesado en el resultado, con un crudeza tan extrema con innata. La combinación de ambas coordenadas da como punto de unión un sonido mastodóntico al que la producción, alejada de la cristalinidad habitual en muchas otras bandas, otorga una sensación de clandestinidad, siendo el vinilo el mejor formato para degustarlo. Cabe afirmar que estamos ante una de las obras más modestas en medios y al mismo tiempo más brillantes de este 2010.
En los minutos 32 minutos que dura este "Indhentet Af Døden" (compuesto por 6 cortes, amén de una intro y un interludio) el muestrario de crujientes guitarras combinado con la obesa sección rítmica generan un producto rico en calidad interpretativa, con guturales graves y profundos en el micrófono, absolutamente imprescindibles en el conjunto de las composiciones pese a su linealidad y que se funden sin mácula con las instrumentales, en las que el bajo ejerce de auténtico dictador sobre el sonido global, imponiéndose sobre el resto de elementos. Las referencias citables a la hora de tratar de asemejar el sonido de UNDERGANG a otras bandas son claras: IMPETIGO, AUTOPSY e incluso los primeros CARCASS servirían como vara para medir no sólo la intencionalidad sino también el resultado que alcazan los de Copenhague.
Uno de las notas particulares y diferenciadoras de UNDERGANG es la ausencia de miedo a la hora de expresarse en su lengua materna: el danés. El contenido lírico de la obra queda limitado a los dominadores de ese idioma, pero por otro lado, la capacidad interpretativa del grupo en las piezas es lo suficientemente elocuente como para dejar claro el concepto de banda ante el que estamos, jugando en esto un papel fundamental las antes mencionadas influencias del Grindcore y el Sludge, siendo estos estilos los que dictaminan el estado de ánimo de cada composición.
Sin duda sorprende la calidad de "Indhentet Af Døden", sobre todo por tratarse de un disco de debut diseñado en un primer momento para servir de demo presentación. Sin ser original, hablamos de un disco old school y por ende no trae nada no escuchado anteriormente a la palestra, esta primera referencia de UNDERGANG les sitúa en una inmejorable posición en la concurrida escena underground del Death Metal. Se hace obligatorio de ahora en adelante seguir muy de cerca los pasos de esta banda.
If, by the end of this year, another album is released that packs as heavy and as groovy a kick-to-the-head as UNDERGANG’s “Indhentet af Døden,” clearly, I’d be goddamn floored with disbelief. (This is an exaggeration - heaviness is subjective, but goddamn if this isn't near the top!)
Copenhagen’s UNDERGANG play a freakish type Old School Death Metal, Grind, Sludge hybrid one would expect to find nestled in the back of a tattered circus tent. Your curiosity forces you to inch closer, but by the time you realize your mistake, it’s far too late. The UNDERGANG beast has awoken, and in quite a gruesome display of carnal lust and long-dormant aggression, it bursts upon you in an explosion of fury and pummeling overhands. Running and hiding is futile. Your ass belongs to the UNDERGANG.
For a debut LP, “Indhentet af Døden” is quite the trip. The modest production doesn’t want things shining in luminescence; it wants you gasping, struggling to find a way out. The album’s down-tuned thickness is overwhelming and it never lets up. The bass is an omnipresent villain.
The band’s three members all have roots entrenched in the Danish Hardcore Punk scene, so aside from the music, also impressively managed is the seamless transmutation the band has forged into a grueling Death Metal outfit. The quickened Core pace is heard every so often, but the album never relies on it. If anything, the Punk background serves as an invaluable cornerstone that allows UNDERGANG to focus and mediate their angst. The result, undeniably, is a mammoth sound of various tempos (Doom to Death), thought-out song structures, and, oh yes, uber fucking brutality.
According to their Myspace page, UNDERGANG are inspired and or influenced by bands like AUTOPSY, SUFFOCATION, CARCASS, WINTER, MASTER, BLOOD, KAAMOS, DEATH, IMPETIGO, INNARDS, CREMATORY, MORBID ANGEL, PUNGENT STENCH, and CANNIBAL CORPSE, among many others. And it’s heard.
Super-low growls, tremendous, ground-trembling drum fills, preternatural guitar crunch, and vertigo-inducing bass flow combine for one of the most raw and effective slabs of unremorseful Death Metal of the year. It also helps that the album cover artwork is fuckin’ awesome.
Oh, how I’ve been looking forward to this one. Ever since I first heard a couple of samples from a demo session a year ago I knew Undergang would become a force to be reckoned with. I saw them live and was even more convinced of their competence and skill to deliver powerful brutality of an extreme magnitude. It feels like it’s taken forever, but it’s finally here. It’s easy to build a hype, it’s easy to get too high expectations in anticipation of what you think will be mesmerizing. But trust me when I say Indhentet af døden is just as good as I could ever have hoped for.
The sound is incredibly dense.
Production-wise it’s not much to really decipher since the sound is so incredibly heavy and dense, but it contains such a rugged crudeness as it lacks any kind of crystal clear digital cleanliness of modern day metal. The serious churning and pummeling of the bass is almost overwhelming, and it’s been a long time since I last heard a record with such emphasis on that particular instrument. I love the way they let the bass play an important role in their music, and the heaviness of it is increased to a marvelous magnitude. But before any of this kicks in we’re offered a schizoid and eerie piano intro that fits so well into the aesthetics of the album. And then the rumbling commences.
The old school death metal influence is very present, just as I sense a dose of old school goregrind as well. It’s blended to create a very rotten sound, oozing of gore and brutality. Minor, technical guitar quirks are mixed with a pure onslaught of fast riffing; overwhelmingly groovy. And the groove is emphasized by the doom parts thrown in every now and then, and just as fitting of a name drop as Autopsy, Impetigo and Carcass would be, the major denomination would probably be Winter for that groovy sensation of doom flirtation. But I also feel a slight touch of Sewn Shut, or maybe it’s just the unrelenting heavy grinding that the two acts have in common. Fast hammering comes at you like a stampeding horde of elephants, but as soon as the horde reaches you it turns into a bulldozer, slowly rolling over your corpse; turning it into a bloody mess. I can’t even begin to describe how heavy-as-hell this is.
The doom is best represented by Tvangstanker, which opens up with a major dose of slow churning riffage, masterful drum beats and with one hell of a groove to it. Afterwards it moves on to a more death metal based track, while still retaining that incredible sense of doom. The acoustic tune, De dødes passage, adds a magnificently angstfilled touch, and once again it fits in oh-so-well with the aesthetics. Lyrically it’s dark and ominous tales of child murder, death, pain, torment and suffering. But what makes this stand out from the crowd is the fact that it’s in Danish, which gives it an even greater genuine sense of a stark, haunting atmosphere. And with the incredibly low-end grunts the brutality is at an all time high. Vocally it’s very monotonous since it’s nothing but these grunts, but with the powerful voice he commands I don’t see how anyone could possibly have anything to complain about.
It feels like I could go on and on forever giving this album praise, but my vocabulary isn’t equipped with an endless supply of adjectives and nouns. So you’ll just have to take my word for it when I say this is a gem of the underground, and if you have any pride or sense of shame in your god forsaken shrivel of a body you’ll be wise to pick this up before it’s sold out. Although to be released on CD by Extreem Music later this year, such a masterpiece is to be enjoyed on vinyl for full effect.
Undergang absolutely blows me away with this onslaught of heaviness, and they’ve managed to create something so mystic, stark and powerful that I dare say I haven’t heard the likes in years. It was a long time ago since I was so awe-struck by a band, and if they keep this up I’m gonna have to build and dedicate a shrine to their Danish honour.
A lot of hype is made about bands today. Some of the hype is justified , some just isn't. The build up buzz about this band has been overwhelming to put it bluntly. Denmarks "Undergang" is the sickest straight up death metal band to come out in what seems like forever. This is exactly why......
The guitar tone is heavy as fuck. How heavy is fuck you ask ? Fuck is the equivalent of a 747 airliner jet getting flown dead on into your unsuspecting , no pants wearing , naked as the day you were born nuts. The subtle crunch that oozes old Rottrevore worship from its very core fully engulfs the listener in a pungent, putrid, foul, warming ooze that soothes every last longin- for-great-death-metal nerve that one could possibly have left in their body from the endless barrage of "wannabe greats in a flooded scene of imitators". Every single note, riff, choke, slide, and power chord seems to be meticulously planned out for an all out assault on those seeking melody, harmony, or just a simple gulp of breath from the cesspool stink that this band embodies to perfection. The bass is below bottom heavy and rounds out the indescribable amount of adjectives, and nouns one would need to dig up from their encyclopedia to properly describe the sickness and disease this band spreads from their very core even on a casual listen. Did I mention the catchiness of the songs ? They are catchy, almost doom-laden although there is nothing "doom metal" about this record.
The pummeling one takes from listening to the utter brutality of the music is the sonic equivalent of going the distance in a heavyweight 12 round prizefight with your hands bound behind your back to put it mildly. The drums are skull crushing with a heavy dose of "dare I say"... talent. The pounding grinding beats are relentless and chaotic feeling all the while keeping perfect time. The fills are insanely delivered and are very infectious. They are the perfect compliment to the rest of these unbelievably constructed, death metal anthems. The vocals are gut wrenching and gutural and sound as if the grim reaper laid down the vocal track himself. No harmonies and melodies and crap like that on here at all. The lyrics are in Danish and I don't read Danish but that doesn't matter because music after all is sound right? It doesn't matter to me what your singing as long as it sounds sick and trust me this guy sounds sick. Just pure sick deeper than deep death the way us purists (like me) love it. The way of the old-school, the way it should be in the underground.
This record pukes in your open mouth for 32 minutes, it's just that mean, and if you don't like it go put on your favorite Cannibal Corpse sellout record and leave the real death metal for the people that really are into death metal like Undergang. If your looking for anything but the heaviest of heavy then keep looking but if true no bullshit flesh melting death served cold in the coffin is what's on your menu everyday like it is on mine; well then Denmarks Undergang are serving breakfest, brunch, lunch and dinner EVERY FUCKING SECOND on this platter of disease infected splatter. When's the next album?????? get this now..... SERIOUSLY...... PERFECT........
