The return of the Thrash Metal legends!! 4th album of this classic band with a more brutal & extreme style. A unique mixture of old school Thrash Metal with Death Metal hints (even blast-beats!!). A killer album from a killer cult band!!
When I heard that Hallows Eve released a new album, my hart stopped for a moment. Still, I do not know if it stopped from happiness or fear. Hallows Eve was and is a cult thrash band from the eighties that released three great albums: the classical “Tales Of Terror” (1985), the underestimated “Death And Insanity” (1986) and “Monument” (1988). All three albums are pure thrash the American way. After the 1988 release a long silence came and hardly anything was heard from the band. However, in 2004 Tommy Stewart reformed the band and started rehearsing and playing again, resulting in this “Evil Never Dies” CD. Originally, this was a self-release done by the band, but the Spanish label Xtreem music has now re-released it, so the distribution is much better.
Hallows Eve 2006 has hardly anything to do with the band from the eighties. One can hear that the roots are superb thrash metal (thank God) but at the same time, one can also hear that they have followed the music scene during the long years of silence. So don’t expect thrash metal like the “Tales Of Terror” or “Monumentum” album, but some sort of hybrid metal with thrash -, death - and black metal influences, combined with the wayward Hallows Eve thrash.
The album starts promising with the thrash attack track “Soldier” for 7:10 minutes. This gives you the opportunity to get used to the new Hallows Eve. A short track is “Roadkill”, but this track sounds the most like the old Hallows Eve. For a good impression of the new Hallows Eve the tracks “Vampire Drinks Deep” and “Evil Never Dies (including Black Queen)” is a good representation. All the before mentioned influences can be heard on this two tracks.
It took me several listening sessions before I could understand this new Hallows Eve. In addition, it took several listening sessions before I started to appreciate this new Hallows Eve. So, is it correct that this music was made under the banner of Hallows Eve? Yes, because the music is still thrash, well thought and wayward. The vocals are something that one must get used to, since they are done by Tommy Stewart (normal) and by Skullator (grunt).
I can only conclude that this album needs time to grow on you, but after that, this disc will be hard to be remove from the CD-player.
Después de una hibernación de 16 años, esta legendaria banda de Thrash metal de los 80 vuelve a la carga. Es su cuarto trabajo de larga duración, después de Tales of Terror, Death And Insanity y Monument, sacados entre 1985 y 1988 a través de Metal Blade. En este último trabajo, autoproducido en un principio en 2004, se adentran más en los sonidos más death metaleros, conservando la esencia y estructuras básicas del Thrash Metal de la vieja escuela que les caracteriza. De las voces deathmetaleras se encarga el guitarra Skullator, así como también está presente el bajista Tommy Stewart, el que comenzó todo, quien además se encarga de las voces "limpias". Diseño old shool, música old school y producción que suena a años 80, como debe ser. Si los anteriores tres trabajos eran temáticos, tratando por ejemplo Tales of Terror de diversas historias de miedo, Death and Insanity, dedicado por completo a los diferentes aspectos de la muerte y Monument que trata acerca de la ansiedad, en este trabajo nos encontramos con que cada tema va de una historia diferente, o como dicen ellos mismos, describe una "snapshot" distinta. Así, tenemos por ejemplo Vampires Drink Deep, que trata sobre un mal trato que sale mal o Black Queen que trata acerca de una visita al dentista. Pues bien, se trata de 9 pistas y 46 minutos de lo que todos los que conocíamos a hallows eve podíamos esperar, añadiendo cierto regusto deathmetalero, no sólo en algunas voces guturales, sino en algunos ritmos, cosa que se puede comprobar rápidamente poniendo el totalmente deathmetalero corte 4 Looking Glass. If there's a band that's a true cult in the Thrash/ Death Metal scene from the 80's without a doubt Hallows Eve is the answer. Having released 3 killer classic albums from 1985 to 1988 through Metal Blade, now the band decided to rise again with more extreme approach to death metal fields."Evil Never Dies" is cult and raw in a same time... the band almost have no hyperblast beats except on track 4 called "Looking Glass" which longest constant blast beats in the album, in fact if this album have no metal souls, groove oriented and most of all the combo guitar's tone the album will goes to my trash plastic, I really enjoy how the band give some unique riffs of progressive rock, punk rock, heavy metal to death metal... off course all element can be found in this one album on Xtreem Music.
This CD originally came out in May 2005 as a self-release but now was brought to the masses by Xtreem Music from Spain. It seems that Hallow's Eve has a constantly changing line-up, but on this CD, the band consisted of the one and only Tommy Stewart (bass and vocals), Skullator (guitars and vocals, he also played on the illustrious 'Tales Of Terror' album), Dane Jensen (drums) and Brian Ottinger (guitars). "Skully" has left the band in the meantime and was replaced by Jon Kilgore (guitars), leaving Tommy Stewart with the vocal duties.
'Evil Never Dies' has become an interesting album, combining a wide variety of styles from hardcore / punk to old school thrash and speed metal to death metal, courtesy of Skullators deep growling voice.
Although it takes some time to get acquainted with the album, I certainly like listening to this fucker. Well I ordered my copy a year and a half ago through the bands official homepage so I certainly must have heard it a million times by now. If you like the old stuff, I'm sure you will dig this. Be forewarned this is not an average metal album, which will take some time to grow into it.
This month, Hallow's Eve will play a special "Halloween Show" at The Sterling Hotel in Allentown, PA. The event will be filmed for the purpose of an official DVD release and also the band is writing and rehearsing for the fifth studio release. Evil never dies, that's for sure….
¡Y regresan los thrasers americanos de HALLOWS EVE!. Toda una leyenda del Thrash americano vuelve a nosotros con su mezcla de Thrash y toques de Death con sonido de la vieja escuela, no como los sonidos actuales que dicen hacer lo mismo. Y es que la historia de HALLOWS EVE es un tanto extraña. Nacen nada menos que en 1983 y causan un gran impacto en la escena americana con su disco debut “Tales of Terror”, todo un clásico del Speed-Thrash Metal. Tommy Stewart (bajo y voz) y Skullator (guitarra y voz), miembros fundadores de la banda, regresan tras más de 15 años en el olvido. Fue en 1990 cuando se separó la banda tras tres discos de estudio y es ahora, o mejor dicho, hace dos años, cuando vuelven a la carga con un disco autoproducido. Se trata de este “Evil Never Dies”, que no alcanza la producción y distribución deseada hasta hace unos meses, cuando firman un contrato con Xtreem Music.
La verdad es que el estilo musical ha evolucionado bastante. ¡Pero ojo!, digo “ha evolucionado”, no “cambiado”. Han pasado de hacer esa mezcla de Thrash con Heavy Metal clásico americano, a introducir toques mucho más pesados y agresivos, mezclando sobre todo Death Metal. No se por tanto un disco de Thrash propiamente dicho, y eso lo notaremos desde el primer corte “Soldiers”. Riffs pegadizos desde el principio que se embrutecen bastante y crean una atmósfera creciente de agresividad, a la cual colaboran las partes vocales. Junto a este tema, los dos siguientes “Monkey’s Paw” y “Technicolour Roadkill” continuan con este sonido que, pese a la brutalidad alcanzada, recuerda ligeramente al sonido de hace veinte años (he aquí el porque de “evolución” y no “cambio”). Sonido pesadísimo, medios tiempos rompedores.... pero no todo es así.
El siguiente tema “Looking Glass”, pese a mantener el estilo general del disco, se lanza totalmente embrutecido, llegándose a meter ritmos relámpagos (blast-beats) y voces guturales. “Sweetest Tongue, Sharpest Tooth” baja el ritmo, pero no la calidad, puesto que quizás sea el mejor corte de todo el álbum, mucho más Heavy que los anteriores temas, melódico y pegadizo. “Interlude” a cargo de Ottinger, con pianos que dan paso a “Vampires Drink Deep”, de nuevo brutal y lleno de fuerza, con pegadizos y pesados riffs de guitarra y voces guturales que no se pierden en “Evil Never Dies (including Black Queen)”, tema que da nombre al disco.
La verdad es que es casi imposible definir el estilo musical de este disco, porque tiene casi de todo. Incluso la extraña "The Ballad Of Mortuary Harry" que da fin al disco (con el chisporroteo clásico de un vinilo y todo) ese toque añejo y no perdido por HALLOWS EVE. Es Thrash, el Death, el Heavy, es... Quizás es uno de los puntos negativos del disco (para quien así lo crea), puesto que puedes saltar de un sonido a otro completamente distinto en solo un tema. Técnicamente la producción no es espectacular, pero cumple.
Es un disco para escuchar con calma y un par de veces antes de poder entrar a valorarlo. Valioso principalmente por el significado del retorno de los americanos y por el aire fresco que rezuma. Un trabajo variado y muy interesate. Si conocías ya a a HALLOWS EVE, deberías de quitarte toda idea preconcevida. Solo así podrás disfrutar del disco en su totalidad.
La carrera de HALLOWS EVE es ciertamente extraña. Formados en 1983, su primer disco, "Tales Of Terror" es un clásico del Speed-Thrash Metal americano. Con una imagen escénica sacada de Alice Cooper, y una música híbrido entre el Heavy cañero del estilo de ANVIL, EXCITER y el Thrash Metal de SLAYER, el grupo procedente de Atlanta sorprendía al mundo con su primer trabajo. Poco después saldría el también genial "Death And Insanity", con unas composiciones más extensas y elaboradas en lo que a riffs y voces se refiere y un par de años después, ya en 1988 "Monument", tras el cual, y a excepción de una demo en 1990, el grupo se disolvía y ya no se volvía a saber de él.
En 2004, y después de juntarse en otra formación, LESTREGUS NOSFERATUS, Tommy Stewart (bajista original de la banda) y Skullator (guitarrista del primer disco de los americanos), HALLOWS EVE renacía y poco después autoeditaba su retorno: "Evil Never Dies". Sin embargo la poca promoción que se dio al plástico hizo que muchos ni se enteraran de que la banda había vuelto. Afortunadamente este año 2006, Dave Rotten recupera este nuevo trabajo de la mítica banda en su sello Xtreem Music, para darle el lugar que merece y recordar al mundo metálico que HALLOWS EVE siguen vivos, aunque algo diferentes en lo que a su propuesta se refiere, y ahora mismo me explico.
"Evil Never Dies" no se puede decir que sea un disco de Thrash al uso. Tampoco de Death, es más bien una mezcla de varios sonidos, extremos y no tanto, que aunque siguen manteniendo los toques heavys de sus inicios en forma de riffs pegadizos y líneas vocales muy a lo VIO-LENCE o los propios HALLOWS EVE de antaño, se han embrutecido notablemente. Los tres primeros cortes del trabajo, quizás sean los más cercanos al estilo de HALLOWS EVE en sus inicios. Perdiendo la velocidad de sus dos primeros trabajos, composiciones como "Soldier", "Monkeys Paw" y "Technicolour Roadkill" cogen el testigo de "Monument", pero lo llevan a un sonido pesado, con constantes medios tiempos, que pueden recordar a INCANTATION, MORBID ANGEL... sin dejar los toques heavys de los que hablaba.
Sin embargo, este prometedor inicio pronto nos depara sorpresas, y es que "Looking Glass" tiene hasta blast-beats, y la voz dominante es la gutural más que la heavy. Las dosis de melodía tampoco se olvidan, en forma de un magnífico solo de guitarra y unos estribillos vocales limpios muy pegadizos. El ambiente de los tres primeros cortes, pero más Heavy si cabe se vuelve a recuperar en uno de los mejores cortes, de estructura más variada, del trabajo, "Sweetest Tongue, Sharpest Tooth", con constantes mini solos de guitarra y una voz, que aunque se dobla con otra gutural en los estribillos, es predominantemente limpia. No obstante, la línea más cercana al Death Metal que otra cosa, aunque con un toque muy personal que hace que el Heavy no se deje olvidado, es la que se sigue en el resto del trabajo. Y es que dejando a un lado el interludio de piano a cargo de Ottinger, en "Interlude" y la outro de guitarra acústica y emulando el sonido crepitante de un vinilo de "The Ballad Of Mortuary Harry", los dos temas que restan, "Vampires Drink Deep" y "Evil Never Dies (inlcuding Black Queen)" se vuelven a embrutecer sobremanera, dejando a un lado gran parte de los elementos heavys y volviendo a los pesados riffs de guitarra y las voces guturales.
Viendo la descripción del trabajo que acabo de hacer, muchos pensareis que "Evil Never Dies" es un jaleo de disco. No os falta razón, y es que aunque el disco tiene muchos puntos positivos (que ganan en sucesivas escuchas), dejando a un lado que casi nada tiene que ver con los trabajos previos de HALLOWS EVE, hay dos puntos peores que restan en la evaluación final. Por una parte una producción que no pasa de correcta, donde las guitarras están un poco bajas, y las voces guturales no excesivamente definidas. Por otra parte, la irregularidad: el disco posee tantos cambios de estilo, y a la vez temas tan largos, que llega a desquiciar si no lo escuchas con más calma y separando los temas mentalmente entre sí. En conjunto el disco es muy notable, pero falta cohesionar todo esto un poco más.
Sin lugar a dudas es una buena noticia el retorno de HALLOWS EVE, aunque haya sido sin apenas hacer ruido, y el resultado sea un cambio grande en sus parámetros musicales. Teniendo en cuenta que han pasado más de 16 años desde que los HALLOWS EVE de entonces grabaran sus últimos temas, es normal que el regreso no se parezca a lo que hacían en los ochenta, (mejor esto que no ser una mala imitación de si mismos, como otros grupos que han vuelto son).
Si no conocías a esta banda imprescindible, te recomiendo antes que nada que te hagas con la reedición de toda su discografía con innumerables extras que Metal Blade ha llevado a cabo hace poco en la caja "History Of Terror". Luego, para completar, y si te gustan los sonidos más extremos, hazte sin duda con "Evil Never Dies", porque es un gran disco. Si ya conocías a HALLOWS EVE, y eres capaz de dejar a un lado su pasado, podrás disfrutar de un retorno curioso y de gran calidad que no debería pasar desapercibido.
