The story behind REANIMATIONS:

As you can see, this is not a new full length album by AVULSED… so what’s this?? It’s not an album because it only has 3 AVULSED songs, it’s not a mini CD because it has 15 songs, it’s not a compilation CD because it has new songs, covers, AVULSED covers… We must admit this is a pretty weird CD but at the same time it’s something original, don’t you think so?? A perfect apetizer between one album and another!!

This CD came out like an accidental consequence from our original idea that was doing a double CD. One with live songs and other with only cover songs. We were going to cover like 15 songs from many varied styles and in fact we were already working on it, but seeing that this would take most of time from the composition process of new songs for a new album, we decided to skip that idea. At the same time, we got interest from Relapse Records to be a part of some split 7”EP series and they told us to do two new songs for that, so… we immediately started to work on it, but after some months, it looked like that label skipped that idea too and we found ourselves with two new songs, a bunch of covers (the three ones you have here plus some others from DESTRUCTION, DEATH, KING DIAMOND, D.R.I….), so we decided to do a mini CD with our two new songs, a remake of a very old song from our first demo ’92 and three cover songs that would represent the three most influential styles in our music: Death, Thrash & Heavy Metal.

While we were working on this project, we received a video-clip that some french guys did for us (totally for free!!) with images that they recorded during our show in Paris at La Locomotive in June 2005. It was very cool, so we decided to include it on the CD as well but… since we had space left on the disc, we thought that perhaps it would be cool to let other bands to cover our own songs offering a different perspective of our music. We asked about it in our website and the response was overwhelming!! We just wanted to put one or two covers, but there sooo many bands that we ended up including 9 covers!! We had to refuse some bands (sorry guys!!) because there would be too many…

So… enjoy this CD full of “reanimations” done both by AVULSED and other 9 cool bands from very different styles and coming from such different parts of the world!! Watch out for our upcoming full length album and see you on stage!!

No doubt, Reanimations is a cashgrab. But oh, man, what an amazing cashgrab. It mixes the three best things a "best of" can have: new songs, covers, and other bands covering them. And it leaves out the worst part of the "best of": the actual "best of." While it might not sound so interesting, in practice, Reanimations really is. It is in fact one of the best compilations a band has ever put out.

The new songs are, with no exception, typical Avulsed stuff. Melodic but extreme Egyptian-sounding riffs, really brutal vocals and impressive drumming. As opposed to many brutal death bands, their sound is overall really melodic and carefully done, and the songs are actual songs, not a mix of random riffs. The rehash of the old song is tastefully done as well, with a more modern sound. The production is clean and you won't have to struggle to listen to the riffs. When compared to their older stuff, we could say that the tracks here are a lot more mature.

Then, the covers. If anything, they are a big surprise. They covered Exodus' classic "Piranha" in a brutal way, which was definitely the highest point of this segment. The cover of WASP's "I Wanna Be Somebody" is really good as well, but plain weird (WASP playing brutal death? No way!). Then, the last cover is Gorefest's "Mental Misery." The surprising thing is that they managed to turn a decent at best song into a very good one.

As for the "Reanimated tracks," basically Avulsed tracks covered by other bands. There's diversity – a lot of it. The most brutal bands did a great job at covering Avulsed's classics, like Zardonic's remix. The rest were either generic or plainly unfitting. Some of the high/lowlights include:

In Element – "Devourer of the Dead": completely unfitting. It's modern Meshuggah worship mixed with metalcore and gothic version of the song. Yes, better described as a big, big "What the fuck?" And not a good one either.

Carnavage – "Stabwound Orgasm": definitely the best of the batch, it's a lot like early Cock and Ball Torture but playing brutal death. Definitely what an Avulsed cover should be.

Kaothic – "Sweet Lobotomy": really traditional doom or Acid Bath sounding cover, with new Confessor-like vocals. Strange, but sweet.

Zardonic – "Stabwound Orgasm (Remix)": So you thought the album Cybergore was weird? What we have here is a drum 'n bass remix of Avulsed's classic. Against all odds, it's completely enjoyable and, once you got used to listening to electronica with death vocals, actually quite good. Not for the closed-minded.

In closing, Reanimations is really good, and varied enough to have you playing it for days. See, Megadeth? THIS is a "best of".

AVULSED is delivering a new album with 15 tracks of which the first 2 are new. And "Unconscious Please" is a remake (the song appeared on Embalming In Blood demo outta 1992). They supposed to be released on a 7" for Relapse but that never took place. Another idea was to do something with covers of their fav bands so they took 3 of them. And after a request of the site to seek bands who want to play Avulsed tracks they got a huge response. So 9 of them were chosen and put on this disc. So there you get the 15 tracks. And as a real bonus you get a live track made by some French fans. It is interesting to here the covers and the other bands who give their own twist to the songs. But everybody is curious about the new tracks. Well, they rock. Mid tempo death metal with accelerations in multiple tempo changes. Low growls over groovy metal melodies. The trademarks for Avulsed and proving that they are in top 10 of the death metal gods.

Avulsed are somewhat of Death Metal legends by now. They've been around since 1991 and I've lost track of how many albums these guys have released since then, between full-length albums, demos and MCD's. "Reanimations" is the name of their latest piece of work but it's not really a new album, at least as far as new songs are concerned. The idea at first was release two brand new tracks, a remake of a demo from 1992 and three covers of Exodus, Wasp and Gorefest. But then they decided to add 9 new covers, but this time from Avulsed songs made by other bands. Like a tribute or something, I think it's the first time I see this happening, at least concerning a band of this genre. The result is more than one hour of music (plus a video) which should be enough to keep the fans happy until the release of the next album.

There isn't much to talk about a band like Avulsed by now. Death Metal sounding like a mix between something more technical and something more brutal, nothing you haven't heard before from them. The covers from the other bands are a good way to get to know them, in my opinion. They come from all around the world and for the fans who enjoyed them may feel tempted to get to know them a little better. So everyone's a winner here. The band for releasing something more original and not just the 3 songs plus the 3 covers, the other bands for being a part of this, and the fans for discovering new bands as well. I specially enjoy the ending track "Stabwound Orgasm" since it's quite different from the others, being a remix from Zardonic and all. Recommended to Death Metal fans!

Spanish deathsters Avulsed still keeping their mainly purpose playing old school death metal without forgot its root and this 12st Avulsed's record is about tributes. The album is like a big apreciation to respect three most influential styles in Avulsed existence which are death metal, thrash metal and heavy metal, mean that Avulsed has cover 'Mental Misery' of Gorefest, 'Piranha' from Exodus and 'I Wanna Be Somebody' of WASP, all cover versions are played in Avulsed's style without loosing the originality. Not long being surprised by these tracks, I found one great and interesting Dave Rotten's idea on the CD, he give a big spot to let another metal bands covering Avulsed in many different styles, there are 9 lucky bands involved in the tribute to Avulsed, and there are Terroristars, In Element, Khaotic and Zarconic who succeed impressing me a lot covering death metal Avulsed in their own style. After 15 years existence, without rest... the cult is alive better and stronger than ever!

I właśnie taki „River Runs Red” - utwór prosty jak niejeden pan w krawacie w biało-czerwone pasy, zagrać mógł jedynie taki AVULSED. Surowa, momentami wręcz naiwna łupanka, skoczny riff i wpadająca w ucho melodyka. Kolejne trzy numery to covery EXODUS, WASP i GOREFEST (same w sobie mają gorsze i lepsze momenty, generalnie niezłe, oczywiście z racji stylistyki najlepiej wypada ten ostatni) w wykonaniu Rottena i s-ki, natomiast dziewięć następnych numerów są to kawałki AVULSED jeno zagrane przez inne zespoły (hiszpańskie gwoli ścisłości). Jedni prosto, bez zbędnego pierdolenia, inni pokombinować postanowili (vide IN ELEMENT czy dupny ABYFS). Jednym nie przeszkadza chujowy do bólu werbel przyprawiający o bóle mosznej (CARNAVAGE), inni z fajnym feelingiem wtłaczają nieco sampli i fajnego klawisza (WITCHES SABBATH). Do całego wydawnictwa został jeszcze dodany jeden video clip AVULSED (koncertowy, ale numer przedni, bo „Let Me Taste Your Flesh”!!! aarrrghh!).

This is not the new album from the pack lead by mister Rotten following “Goresplattered Suicide” as I initially thought, in fact this an enhanced MCD with a slightly “strange” concept – strange as in “unusual” which seems to appeal to AVULSED from time to time if one remembers their remix CD “Cybergore” some years ago (if somebody wants to get rid of that one – contact me, hehe). Now, “Reanimations” is not again a technoid remix CD (apart from the last song). The first three songs on here are AVULSED's own compositions with their trademark brand of heavy Death Metal with influences from the classic Finnish sound from the early 90s. 'River Runs Red' (not a LIFE OF AGONY cover) and 'Foetal Consolation' are the only new songs on here whereas 'Unconcious Pleasure' is a re-recorded track from their first demo, blending in quite well with the new tracks. Following are AVULSED's takes on classics from EXODUS ('Piranha'), W.A.S.P. ('I Wanna Be Somebody') and GOREFEST ('Mental Misery'), the latter being the most convincing as it is stylistically not too far away from the band's original sound. There also seems to be a video clip for 'Let Me Taste Your Flesh' made up from gig footage, unfortunately this one is not included on the promo CD. And now to the strange part: to fill the remaining space AVULSED let nine bands cover their own material. The results are quite mixed as every bands follows a different style – not all bands are Death Metal, some play a modern kind of groovy Thrash, sometimes even semi-clear / melodically shouted or even female voices are used. The last song is a remix of 'Stabwound Orgasm' going in a jungle / breakbeat direction (some synthie parts sound quite like Trance, though). I am glad the band dropped the original idea of recording a disc full with covers of classics as I am not too fond of that anyway but turned up with this rather unusual idea. Not every version may be great but at least this is quite interesting. On top of it you get a cool cover and if I am not mistaken there is also a limited edition with a syringe filled with ominous green liquid available at shows or from the band directly… maybe a collectors release after all!

Like any Death Metal fan, when I eagerly put on an album of a band I have liked for years, I expect certain things. With Avulsed I expect deep guttural vocals, lots of riffs, plenty of rhythm, great drum sound including a chest thudding bass drum and tons of bass that makes your speakers groan with the heaviness. With Reanimations I get all of these except the tons of bass on the new songs, which is the very important for a band like Avulsed. Reanimations is not a new album by Avulsed but a mixture of material serving as an intermediary before the next full length. However according to Mr Rotten it’s not an album or mini album but “an appetiser between one album and the next”. I can hear some of you cynics saying “cash in”. The album consists of 2 new Avulsed songs, a reworking of an older song, 3 covers, 9 bands covering Avulsed songs and a video clip. The new Avulsed songs sound very clean with nice crisp guitar sections and a crystal clear drum sound. The bass is lacking somewhat as previously mentioned but this does not deter from the battering and pulverising you’d expect from Avulsed. The reworked song is Unconscious Pleasure from the bands 1992 demo Embalmed in Blood, which having not heard the original, would easily sit among any of the newer songs Avulsed do today.

The 3 cover versions on offer are Piranha (Exodus); I Wanna Be Somebody (W.A.S.P.) and Mental Misery (Gorefest). Avulsed are no strangers to cover songs, with Ace of Spades being on their last album, Gorespattered Suicide. With the exception of the Gorefest cover, I found it difficult to enjoy the cover songs. Piranha is played at absolute breakneck speed. The melody of the song is there, but the song on first listen seems blasted out and comes across as chaotic. After repeated listens it does get better but as expected the original is better. The W.A.S.P. cover reminds of Six Feet Under doing their awful take on classic metal songs on the Graveyard Classics album. Probably would be enjoyable to hear one of these covers at a gig for a laugh. The rest of the audio aspect of the album contains 9 bands covering Avulsed songs. I have to admit to not having heard of the most of the bands on here. All the bands have been selected after the band suggested the idea on their website. There is a great deal of variation in the songs, ranging from a typical cover to surprises to downright shock. Of the songs on offer, the more typical covers by Embraced, Byleth and Carnavage covering Gorespattered Suicide, Protervia and Stabwound Orgasm respectively don’t really offer anything new in terms of experimentation, but are competent enough versions. Of the remaining covers Devourer of the Dead by In Element has been industrialised with keyboards interspersing the mix. Witches’ Sabbath spoil their cover by adding a pointless keyboard section in the middle of Blessed by Gore. Powdered Flesh and Sweet Lobotomy by Terroristars and Kaothic respectively have much cleaner vocals, with the Kaothic song being the most interesting and different song overall of the two and of all the covers. My favourite song by Avulsed namely Sick Sick Sex has been annihilated by Abfys. An intro has been added, with female vocals hovering in the background and the typical guttural ones at the forefront. There are also spoken words you can hear in the background. Finally there’s a techno “Reanimix” of Stabwound Orgasm which makes me cringe. This isn’t the first time Avulsed have dabbled with having their songs remixed. The Cybergore album is full of them and like that album the remix is of no interest to me whatsoever.

The CD also contains a live video of Let Me Taste Your Flesh shot by a couple of French dudes last year in Paris. The guys have put a lot of effort into the video by amalgamating various camera footage of the song to produce almost a promo video for it. The only criticism is that the footage is little dark. Despite my criticisms of some of the covers, the CD has had much effort put into it and is a worthy addition to keep Avulsed fans placated till the new album.
