2nd full length album of this legendary italian band recorded in Denmark at Starstruck Studios with Anders Lundemark (KONKHRA) as producer, the album includes 8 songs in the usual tradition of the band since their inception, this is: total swedish Death Metal worship!! With a 100% swedish sound, any lover of bands like early DISMEMBER, CARNAGE, ENTOMBED, GOD MACABRE and the likes, will find on this album a perfect way to go back to the golden days of the original swedish Death Metal scene.
Dos años se ha hecho esperar este CD de los veteranos Horrid, ya que en principio debía haber salido en 2004 a través de Deadsun Records, lo cual no sucedió por algunos problemas entre la banda y ellos, y ha sido, finalmente, Xtreemmusic, quien se ha llevado el gato al agua, sacando este trabajo a la luz. Este es el segundo trabajo de larga duración de la banda, tras Reborn In Sin del 2002 y el recopilatorio Evil´s Birth, también del 2002, además de un MCD (Blasphemic Creatures), un 7"EP (Awating for the Truth) y dos demos. Esta banda italiana, nacida en 1989 se vio fuertemente influenciada por la escena sueca de la época, y como resultado tenemos su sonido, Death Metal Sueco de la vieja escuela, en la onda de Dismember, Unleashed, Grave, etc… Tras los pertinentes y habituales cambios de formación de toda banda de metal extremo que se precie grabaron en 2004 este segundo trabajo en los estudios Starstruck de Dinamarca, bajo la producción de Anders Lundemark (Konkhra/Daemon). Pues bien, se trata de un CD de ocho pistas y 43 minutos, las siete primeras y la última, que es un outro. Las siete primeras se trata de Death Metal sueco de la vieja escuela, con una producción algo más limpia que los trabajos de aquella época dorada del death metal pero con cierto regusto a aquella suciedad de sonido tan característica. Bastantes medios tiempos, trozos más rápidos con el estilo antiguo, es decir, nada de blast beat ni nada que se le parezca, ritmos más cercanos al Thrash metal, característicos del estilo y riffs melódicos de guitarra que hacen que el que no sepa de esta banda piense que se trata realmente de una banda sueca. El corte que cierra el CD es una outro de unos 3 minutos con una especie de mensaje oculto después de otros 7 minutos de silencio, curioso. En definitiva, un buen trabajo en la onda de aquellos trabajos de entes que a tantos nos atrajeron y nos ataron a este vicio del metal extremo.
Maybe I’m just missing out, but I believe HORRID is the first Italian Death Metal band that I’ve heard. Not that it really makes any difference, as HORRID don’t exactly sound Italian (at least I don’t think so), but more a mix of the older varieties of Swedish and American Death Metal. But again, I’m not exactly well versed in brutal Death Metal, so I could be off base here.
What I do hear on HORRID’s “Rising From The Hidden Spheres” is competent and brutal music, with loads of groove and a MORBID ANGEL meets UNLEASHED sense of melody. The tempo of the album ranges from mid-paced to almost thrashy, but rarely goes into lightning quick blasts, which helps to give the album that old-school feel. The riffs and leads are never mind blowing, but are tasty nonetheless. HORRID’s nearly constant use of guitar leads throughout every song is a definite plus, acting as a counter balance to the brutal rhythm section. The vocals cover a range of aggressive styles, from gutteral growls to black-ish whispers to throaty yells, occassionally making use of double tracking to give an echo effect.
Overall, “Rising From The Hidden Spheres” is a pretty solid Death Metal release that does not shy away from wearing its influences on its proverbial sleeve. If you’re looking for solid, brutal yet melodic Death Metal and aren’t a stickler for originallity, “Rising From The Hidden Spheres” might be for you.
Well, if you're fans of pure 100% Swedish sound like early Dismember, Carnage and Fleshcrawl so you shouldn't miss Horrid, a total death metal worship of golden era of the original Swedish death sound, most interesting part is the fact that Horrid hailings from Italy. Related to how Horrid musical concept, 'Rising From The Hidden Spheres' contents 8 tracks plus bonus clip video, there's no more details about their music beside they like a real Swedish viking bands... but they come with more faster like these days death metal. Something raw,tight and pure death metal? why not....
Italy is to congratulate today since their team just advanced to the finals on World Cup. Nothing to do with music, I know, but it happened to come the time to review a band from that country, so it's a good way to start.
Formed all the way back in 1989, Horrid finally decided to put another album out there after four years of absence. Now this is a little strange. How come a band that has been around for so long has only released two full-length albums? Well they did have some line-up changes during these years, but you know what they say, better late than never!
Not coming as any surprise with a name like this, Horrid's music genre goes one way and one way only: Death Metal. They also go a little back and bring the old school Swedish Death Metal scene, something you don't really see out there all that much lately since most bands follow a more melodic approach of the Swedish scene.
"Rising From The Hidden Spheres" is actually not a bad album at all. Usually bands that come all the way from the 80's (even if it's the end of the 80's) and play Death Metal don't get my attention all that much simply because the music tends to be a little boring. Well, VERY boring. But Horrid are not really the case. These veterans know what they are doing and they do it quite well, even after all these years. I just had a little trouble getting in to those drums at first, they sounded "weak" (in terms of sound, not the way they were played) at first but eventually you end up letting that go.
This release should definitely appeal to Death Metal fans all around, from heavy to the more technical side of the genre, Horrid will definitely make more fans with their new album.
The death metal scene of today is full of old school Swedish death metal bands and the Italian band Horrid is yet another one of those bands copying this style. Even though the band has been around since 1989, 'Rising From The Hidden Spheres' is only their second full length release.
Whereas their first album 'Reborn in Sin' was recorded at the famous Sunlight Studios in Sweden, their latest effort was recorded at the Starstruck Studios in Denmark with Anders Lundemark (Konkhra) as producer. This album contains eight death metal songs, which are quite enjoyable and as the biography states this is total Swedish death metal worship. However, with Dismember, Grave, Entombed and Unleashed teaming up for the 'Masters of Death' European tour later this year, what is the point in releasing or (from a fan's point of view) buying a worship-album, when the originators of this style are still going strong?
Horrid is an Oldschool deathmetal band from Italy. Horrid got a lot of inspiration from old Entombed, Dismember and other oldschool Swedish deathmetal bands.
The first demo these guys released was back in 1992 so they are into the scene for quite a long time. This album "Rising From The Hidden Spheres" is their 3e full album and fuck, what a wall of deathmetal. They have recorded this album in Denmark by engineer "Andre Lundemark" who also has done Konkra and Daemon so if you get this cd you can expect a great fucking sound. And when you like to take a trip back in time of the great Swedish deathmetal, run to your favorite cdshop and buy this disk. Their compositions are from really high quality and I must give them compliments for their work. cool mid and low tempo parts altered with up-tempo killer moves. I think this album will beat a lot of Swedish sounding bands. This album has been released on Xtreemmusic last march so when you haven't got this disk get it I'm fucking sure you going to like this one.
Lo que aquí tenemos es una acojonante nueva edición a través del sello Xtreem Music, y se trata ni más ni menos del segundo álbum de esta banda Italiana. Pues bien ya su primer disco llamado, Reborn In Sin dejo un buen sabor de boca a todos los seguidores del metal Sueco, ya que por el hecho proceder de otro país (que no sea USA o Suecia) no quiere decir que estén exentos de calidad. Esa maravillosa obra lo produjo el genio Tomas Skogsberg, que capto toda la esencia de las bandas suecas de principios de los noventa, con excelentes composiciones y estructuras, por eso Reborn In Sin logró una gran respuesta de sus seguidores. Tras esto deciden dejar su sello, y poco después se deciden por el sello español que les edita su segundo lanzamiento Rising From The Hidden Spheres, el cual se podría describir como una continuación, incluso lo veo algo distinto y con un sonido mas brutal y pesado, pero siempre en la misma línea. Este esta producido también por el lider de Konkhra, Anders Lundemark, y esto se hace notar bastante en los mas o menos cincuenta minutos que dura el álbum. Como dijimos siguen la misma onda de bandas como Dismember, Entombed, Necrophobic, Carnage, pero quizás con una regustillo mucho más cercano a Vomitory. Sus composiciones son excelentes con rápidos riffs de guitarra que te dejan boquiabierto sin dejar de lado esos excelentes solos que dichas bandas sabían crear, con toda su oscuridad, y sentimiento profundo. La voz de su cantante va en una línea gutural y agresiva, y es muy original para mi gusto. La batería hace una buena labor ejecutando a la perfección su instrumento creando momentos nostálgicos que te dejan de piedra respecto ala perfecta compenetración instrumental de los demás miembros. Todos los temas siguen la misma línea, así que es difícil destacar alguno exceptuando el último que es una especie de corte instrumental, por supuesto muy bien tocado. También como regalo tenemos un video-clip del tema que da titulo al disco que a más de uno le encantara, pero no adelanto más. La producción como dije es todo un éxito y no es para menos, y ya ni hablemos de la presentación muy currada, con una excelente portada. Para terminar vuelvo a repetir que no os fijéis en el país del que proceden los grupos para determinar si saben crear un estilo o no. Si no lo sabéis apreciar sin duda estos Horrid lo dejan muy claro. La calidad es indiferente a la tierra de la que proceden.
Horrid's music might not be innovative for the deathmetal scene, but in the trendy years we live, when most of the bands try to play melodic death metal, this is definitely a blessing for my ears! Yep Horrid's influences also derive from the Sweden, but not from the melodic Gothenburg school. This group from Italy through the 8 tracks that are included on their second album, shows its appreciation to bands like THE ENTOMBED, HYPOCRISY, AMON AMARTH (first 2 albums), DISSECTION and DISMEMBER. The biggest part of their compositions is characterized by a mid tempo rhythm section that leads to thrash metal explosions. And that's not the only thing that I loved in Horrid's music... I also enjoyed the more classic metal touches, which I can't deny that they brought to my mind the good old RUNNING WILD. All the songs are above average, but those that I liked the most are: "From Here To Eternity", "Rising From The Hidden Spheres", "Harmonic Devastation" and "Outro". Finally the CD includes as bonus, a live video of the song "Rising From The Hidden Spheres".
Horrid, aunque son Italianos, suenan como ellos mismos dicen... a Suecos, en concreto al death Sueco estilo los primeros Entombed y Dismember (el llamado "sonido Sunlight"), y aunque en su segundo disco completo no han grabado en el Sunlight Sueco sino en los Starstruck Studios Daneses con Anders Lundemark (Konkhra), el sonido es el mismo. Se podrían considerar una imitación de los ya mencionados antiguos grupos, pero no sería justo, ya que tampoco copian a nadie en concreto, sino que más bien utilizan el sonido y el estilo tan característicos de éstos. Horrid nos presentan un disco bastante variado, que no aburre a la larga de escucharlo y cuenta con riffs acertados que construyen temas mayoritariamente a medio tiempo con algunos arranques de más velocidad. "Rising From the Hidden Spheres" contiene ocho temas, entre ellos un track bastante largo, "Harmonic Devastation", que empieza con una melodía muy pegadiza, y un outro. A destacar entre los demás estarían especialmente "Feeling Hate" y "Redemption and Lies", que mezclan riffs ultrapesados con partes rápidas y cambios muy bien hechos.
Sin duda un disco que le va a gustar a los amantes del Oldschool Swedish Death Metal, pero también es indicado para cualquiera que le guste el death metal en general.
Tambien incluye un videoclip de "Rising From the Hidden Spheres" (para ordenador) que consiste básicamente en una breve presentación de la banda y el directo del tema.
MORTIFILIA, KAAMOS, VERMINOUS, PAGANIZER... y un largo etcétera de grupos surgidos en la segunda parte de los noventa has intentado recuperar el viejo sonido de Estocolmo. Con resultados muy buenos en la mayoría de los casos, los aficionados al Death Sueco de la vieja escuela hemos podido volver a disfrutar con un sonido único y reconocible a la primera escucha. La originalidad es lo de menos, se trata de recuperar una época muy prolífica para el Death y que bandas como CARNAGE, DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED, GRAVE, NIHILIST, DESULTORY... hicieron famosa.
HORRID no se puede considerar un miembro más de toda esa pléyade de bandas relativamente nuevas revisionarias del sonido de Estocolmo. El cuarteto italiano existe desde que ese sonido nació a finales de los ochenta, por lo que deben ser considerados más miembros de la escuela originaria citada, que recreadores de la misma. Solamente les diferencia que, como los alemanes FLESHCRAWL, no son suecos. El sonido de las guitarras tan característico de todos los grupos citados, con una afinación más grave de lo habitual y unos riffs que juntan la brutalidad con la melodía, los ritmos de herencia Thrash, sencillos pero efectivos, la voz gutural (muy similar a la de los citados FLESHCRAWL) poderosa y oscura, y ese bajo omnipresente que llena todos los huecos. Todos los elementos del Death Sueco más clásico están presentes en este "Rising From The Hidden Spheres", segundo álbum completo de la banda a pesar de su larga historia. Un disco que desde que fuera grabado en 2004 no había conseguido ver la luz hasta que Xtreem Music decidiera ficharlos.
Desde el primer corte y tras una breve intro, te das cuenta de que el sonido conseguido en los Startstruck Studios de Dinamarca podría pasar perfectamente por una producción del señor Skogsberg en los famosos Sunlight Studios. "Nothing Lives Forever", "Feeling Hate" y "Redemption And Lies" son cortes acelerados que suenan a DISMEMBER por sus cuatro costados, con la única diferencia de que HORRID aumentan de manera sustancial el minutaje de sus composiciones superando en muchos cortes los cinco minutos. A veces puede parecer que el alargamiento de las estructuras es excesivo, pero en general consiguen no repetir muchos elementos y que la escucha del disco no se haga tediosa. Otros cortes más reposados dejan ver unas melodías oscuras de bellísima factura. Es el caso de "Rising From The Hidden Spheres" y sobre todo la magnífica "Come To Me". El tema más elaborado por su larguísima extensión de más de nueve minutos es "Harmonic Devastation", quizás el tema que más se sale de la norma, en donde se atreven a meter hasta alguna voz limpia puntual, y donde la parte melódica de la guitarras vuelve a brillar. A lo mejor con una extensión más moderada se habría convertido en mi corte favorito del disco, pero no deja de ser una grandísima composición.
Sin duda "Rising From The Hidden Spheres" no es un disco revelación, pero si es un grandísimo disco al que sólo le encuentro la pega ya comentada de que a veces alargan demasiado las composiciones. Por lo demás estamos ante un disco que no es muestrario de grandes individualidades pero sí de un sonido de conjunto único, digno sucesor de los grandes de la vieja escuela sueca. Los italianos HORRID vuelven a demostrar que el bello país mediterráneo da para mucho más que para LACUNA COIL y RHAPSODY, algo de sobra demostrado en los últimos años en el Metal Extremo con muchos grupos que salen de la península italiana y se colocan a buenos niveles fuera de sus fronteras.
Si eres aficionado al buen Death Metal Sueco envejecido en barrica de roble, HORRID te está llamando a gritos. Toda la esencia del mejor Death europeo de principios de los noventa está contenida en los casi tres cuartos de hora que dura "Rising From The Hidden Spheres". Además en esta edición puedes ver un video de la banda con imágenes en directo, algo que si no se trunca, podremos comprobar en nuestra propia piel en junio en el Xtreem Music Death Festival. Deja que el espíritu de Estocolmo te vuelva a invadir.
