Otro CD de las Xtreem Cult Series. Otra banda de culto de la escena de NY/NJ. Para quienes no conozcan a Revenant pues decirles que es una banda que se creó al final de los 80, contando en sus filas con el finalmente conocido por todos John McEntee, quién los abandonó para formar Incantation y centrarse en un sonido más puramente death metalero. La banda mantuvo actividad hasta 1995, año en l que cesó. En todo este periodo de tiempo sacaron mucho material, pero sólo un CD, Pophecies Of A Dying World en 1991, el resto es el siguiente: en 1987 una demo Beyond The Winds Of Sorrow, en 1988 otra, Asphixiated Time, en 1989 otra, Revenant, en 1990 sacan el 7"EP Distant Eyes/Degeneration, en 1992 el 7"EP Exalted Being, en 1993 la demo Faithless I/Eclipse y en 1995 el MCD Overman. Pues este CD es para recuperar todo aquel material de demos y 7"EPs que casi nadie tenía y hacerlos así accesibles en una especie de tributo a aquel material y a la banda. El resultado de juntar todo aquí material son 13 cortes mas uno en directo de 1991 para un total de 73 minutos. Es interesante tener todo el material antiguo en un solo CD pero quizá al meterlo todo se hace muy largo para escucharlo del tirón. La música que hacían estos Revenant es un Thrash/Death de la vieja escuela, machacón, con guitarras realmente técnicas, con partes más rápidas como mandan los cánones. Partes más melódicas y estructuras complejas de batería. Es otro de esos CD que con el tiempo se convertirán en una joya, ya que esas demos y 7"EP son prácticamente imposibles de encontrar. Para todos los amantes del old school es un imprescindible.
Revenant was founded in ´86 in New Jersey by: John Pratscher (bass) and Henry Veggian (guitar/vox) and, completing the original line-up, John McEntee (guitar) and Joe Fregenti (drums). In memory of this great Death/Thrash band, Xtreem Music releases the compilation: The Burning Ground, which brings together some band classics. One hour and twelve minutes of pure 80´s Death/Thrash, filled with beer, of course. the anthems here are: The Faithless, Eclipse, The Burning Ground, Exalted Being, Infinite Reality, Distant Eyes, Asphyxiated Time, Degeneration, Intro / Futures Ende, Fear, Cataleptic Spirits, Transcending A World Of Shadow , Tyrannical Nightmare, The Unearthly (Live in Den Bosh, Netherlands, December of 1991). This compilation was a great idea, and it is perfect to the band´s name: Ravenant (1 - One who has returned from the dead, 2 - A ghost), this cd is a must to those who want to remember a time when things like fashion were very distant from Heavy Metal.
I guess if you call yourself a true Death Metal fan you'd probably have *at least* heard of this band named Revenant. They were formed all the way back in 1987, but I believe they've ended a few years ago. Still, their website is still online, dedicated to the fans of the group who keep the underground spirit of the band alive.
Looking back at the discography of this North American band you can't help but notice they've only released a full-length album back in 1991, all the rest is a bunch of demos, couple of EP's and their latest release that I'm now listening to and reviewing entitled "The Burning Ground", which is actually a Best Of compilation. Not many bands of the genre do this these days, simply because most of the times bands do this for marketing reasons or to get a little more money, but that's clearly not the case here because Revenant don't have that many albums, so it's actually a very good idea since you have lots of songs from demos and whatnot in one full-length album.
As far as their music style goes, Revenant are somewhat of a mixture between Death and Thrash Metal, actually. Even though I'm a Death Metal fan, the early stuff doesn't really appeal to me mostely due to the Thrash Metal influences. Nonetheless, I believe this release will appeal to many fans of the genre, specially those who are into the whole Death and Thrash mixed together scene. And this CD also contains a booklet with rare photographs, an essay by Hank Veggian, rare artwork and flyers, so a few more reasons to make people purchase it.
This is a curious one. At times it feels like the songs aren't really going anywhere or doing much, but Revenant throw in some pretty decent riffs at times.
It reminds me a little of old At The Gates in places ('With fear...' era), and of very early and mid era Death at different times in the songs ('Scream Bloody Gore' and 'Individual Thought Patterns' mostly), but strangely also heavily compares to some of the recent death / thrash influenced European hardcore / metalcore bands like Liar, Congress and Deformity. Maybe it is the raw edge (also read as not 100% tight as well, as there is a lot of screwdriver work to be done throughout the band and their playing), and lightrer mood eminating from theproduction that gives off that feeling. Also the simplistic lyrics and not totally gutteral vocal delivery as well.
The more I ramble and continue to listen, the more this begins to seep into my brain and work pretty well, and despite lacking a huge punch in power, the riffs have an infectious quality throughout.
¿REVENANT? Muchos estaréis pensando ¿Quién... son esos? Pues bien, no desesperéis, porque el hecho de que REVENANT no sean conocidos para el gran público es otro caso más de injusticia musical, y es más que perdonable que muchos no tengáis ni idea de quiénes son estos americanos.
Con REVENANT, Xtreem Music nos vuelve a obsequiar con otra Xtreem Cult Series, y desde mi punto de vista, la mejor hasta ahora (junto a lo que en su momento editaron de FUNEBRE), o por lo menos la que yo esperaba con más ganas. Banda creada en 1986 (sí, habéis leído bien) y disuelta definitivamente en 1996. Diez años que sólo dieron para un CD oficial ("Prophecies Of A Dying World", todo un clásico despreciado por la propia banda, que ha pasado desapercibido porque su producción dejaba a la banda sin fuerza), un par de EPs y muchas demos y promos. Pues bien, "The Burning Ground" supone la recopilación oficial de todas estas demos, promos y algún tema más, renovados con una remasterización increíble (de verdad, hacedme caso, parece que los temas están grabados ahora y no que tienen quince años) y con un libreto de sobresaliente (lo mejor hecho por Xtreem hasta ahora), lleno de fotos y con una portada cortesía de Phlegeton el cantante de WORMED, que es una maravilla, muy acorde con la letra del tema "The Burning Ground" sobre el desastre de Chernobyl.
En orden decreciente desde 1993 hasta 1987 y con la inclusión al final de un tema en directo de "Prophecies Of A Dying World" de 1991 ("The Unearthly", el único tema que le gustaba realmente a la banda de aquel malogrado debut), esta compilación nos recoge todo lo editado por REVENANT no contenido ni en su único disco completo ni en su EP "Overman" de 1995, y que ha sido editado con los años en forma de vinilos de siete pulgadas y cosas similares. Así pues, esta es una ocasión única y totalmente necesaria de hacerse con todo este material en un sólo CD y con una calidad de sonido hasta ahora imposible de encontrar. Pero vayamos a la música. REVENANT practicaban un Death Metal muy particular, que reunía lo mejor de todo el Metal extremo americano de la época (MORBID ANGEL, SUFFOCATION, DEATH, ATHEIST...), con algún toque más Thrash en sus primeras demos (SLAYER, VOIVOD, y las bandas de Hardcore de finales de los ochenta vendrán muchas veces a nuestra mente) y con unas melodías que lo conectan con el Death Metal europeo del estilo de PESTILENCE. En resumen, un compendio de lo mejor de esta música en el final de los ochenta y el principio de los noventa.
La evolución que se aprecia en el grupo a lo largo de los temas es más que evidente, fundamentalmente por la voz, más cercana al Thrash - Hardcore en sus primeras demos y más Death en los temas de principios de los noventa. También se aprecia en la estructura de los temas, más extensas en los cortes pertenecientes a la promo "Faithless (I) / Eclipse" de 1993 y del EP "Exalted Being" de 1992 (los cinco primeros temas de este CD) dónde la influencia americana se entremezcla con unas excelentes melodías. Son los temas que más te harán disfrutar si te gusta el Death Metal pesado y cargado de cambios de ritmo, además de gozar del sonido más poderoso. Riffs complejos pero a la vez pegadizos llenan estas composiciones, que son las más actuales de las recogidas en "The Burning Ground".
La demo "Distant Eyes-Degeneration" de 1990 (temas 6 a 8) mantiene la voz orientada al Death Metal más brutal, pero la música deja de ser tan reflexiva (sin embargo, no menos compleja), y se hace más cruda y violenta, muy acorde con los tiempos, pero no por ello estamos hablando de unas composiciones menos elaboradas, todo lo contrario ("Asphyxiated Time", no incluida en la demo original, y que supone una nueva versión de este tema ya presente en la segunda demo del grupo, sobrepasa los siete minutos, por poner un ejemplo). Las melodías presentes en lanzamientos posteriores del grupo, oscuras y apocalípticas, ya están presentes, aunque no con tanto protagonismo. El sonido sigue siendo fantástico, aunque evidentemente ya no es tan cristalino como en los primeros cortes. Aún así, insisto que el trabajo de remasterización ha sido excepcional.
Los cuatro temas siguientes (9 a 13) recogen los trabajos más antiguos de la banda, con una formación distinta, pertenecientes a sus dos primeras demos "Beyond The Winds Of Sorrow" (1987) y "Asphyxiated Time" (1988). Son los cortes más orientados al Thrash - Hardcore, dónde la voz, a cargo del bajista original de la banda, cambia hacia un registro agresivo, en una onda muy CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER, D.R.I., C.O.C. y demás. Los riffs y la música se ven acelerados, y las melodías presentes en posteriores trabajos, casi desaparecen, en favor de un sentimiento más agresivo. También se reduce enormemente el minutaje de los temas, pero no deja de ser interesante escuchar estos primeros asaltos musicales de REVENANT (todos los miembros del grupo en esta época estaban por debajo de los 18 años), y en concreto descubrir a un jovencísimo John McEntee (INCANTATION) en un registro bastante alejado de lo que hace con su actual banda. Finalmente la compilación se cierra con la versión en directo de "The Unearthly", de su disco "Prophecies Of A Dying World" (1991) mostrándonos nuevamente a la banda de los primeros temas de "The Burning Ground" y dónde colabora Frank The Bastard (de GOREFEST) en la voz.
En definitiva, una oportunidad que no debes dejar escapar. Un documento histórico único, restaurado de manera brillante y que nos regala más de 70 minutos de Metal extremo creado en la época en que este estilo se estaba creando. Todo un acierto este "The Burning Ground", que debería estar en cualquier discoteca de amantes del Death Metal que se precie. ¿Es difícil soñar con una reunión de la banda? Todo se andará, pero la cosa de momento sólo es una utopía.
