Reedición del clásico deathmetalero y, a la postre, único CD de los veteranos neoyorkinos de Morpheus Descends, que incluye además su mítico 7"EP Adipocere. Esta banda es de las que tiene historia, en concreto 16 años de historia, han tocado con los más grandes, esta banda también tiene historias, como la sobredosis de heroína de su vocalista Jeff Rienner en Agosto de 2005. Los últimos ocho años los han pasado con otros proyectos como puedan ser Mortician, Incantation, o Mausoleum entre otros, después de los cuales parece que esta banda, una de las fundadoras de la escena death metalera de NY parece querer volver. Para ello nada mejor que reeditar el que es su único CD, y su 7" Adipocere, ambos de puro culto. Sería muy aburrido hablar de la historia de esta banda, extensísima en cuanto a sus cambios de formación y relaciones y conciertos con otras grandes bandas. Simplemente me voy a dedicar a la música. El CD de Ritual of Infinity es mítico por la forma de cantar del vocalista Jeff Rienner, que anteriormente estaba n Decomposed. Era una de las voces más tremendamente profundas, guturales, brutales, desgarradoras y sucias y malintencionadas que se habían grabado hasta la fecha. Tenía sentimiento, probablemente ahora habrá vocalistas de brutal death que sean más burros pero todo es como más aséptico, este pavo transmitía odio y dolor, es una joya en cuanto a la vocalización. La música, pues puro death metal de la vieja escuela, guitarras guarras, curradas y rápidas, y tiempos de aquella época. Una obra maestra del Death Metal. Con respecto al 7", se trata de una "reedición" de su primera demo Accelerated Decrepitude de 1990, que salió en 1991 a través de Seraphic Decay Records en 1991 bajo el nombre de Adipocere. El tipo de música no varió mucho desde esa demo hasta el CD Ritual Of Infinity. Puro death metal rebosante de odio y mala baba abriendo caminos en Nueva York, con un sonido más guarrete. Esta reedición de las Xtreem Cult Series, por tanto consta de 14 temas, 48 minutos, de los cuales son 9 del citado CD y 5 del 7". La portada parece que tiene unos colores más vivos que la de la edición original y además añade una miniatura de la portada de Adipocere en su esquina inferior derecha, dibujada por el dibujante de comics gore Jim Sommerville. Otra joya para tu colección, disponible de nuevo para que no tengas que pagar un disparate por algún ejemplar de la primera edición.
Morpheus Descends began in 1990, and released quite a few demos, EPs and CD's until they disbanded in 1997. This re-issue of 2 of their earlier works marks the reformation after members have gone off and done other projects for a while, including taking part in Incantation, Mortician, Stormcrow, Dysperium and more. Plans for a full album of new material are afoot, so it's nice to backtrack over their previous recordings.
For those elder statesmen and women in the death metal scene (and for those who have backtracked through the ages), this takes me back to the days of Baphomet, Disincarnate, Banished and more recently to the likes of Incantation, Immolation et al. The darkened mood and the relentless, pummeling guitars plus the horrifying deep rasps hark of pure unwatered down death metal. No cross breeding or intermingling of styles as you hear these days. No progressiveness (although don't mistake that for not being off kilter and lacking in odd direction changes, because it does all of that), just out and out filthy, blasphemous death metal as it was intended to be.

This what most of us oldschool Death Metal freaks have been longing for. Xtreem Music have made our wet dream come true! They have exumed one of the most beloved New York sounding Death Metal gems of the golden era of the genre. Back in the day when "Ritual Of Infinity" was released it caused a stir in the Death Metal underground due to its somber approach and excellent musicanship positioning them shoulder-to-shoulder with the best contenders of the scene at that time such like INCANTATION, SUFFOCATION or even CANNIBAL CORPSE. MORPHEUS DESCENDS was particularly the perfect mixture of Speed / Thrash playing techniques with the most slow, grinding and twisted Death Metal attacks ever recorded. The album was just released in the right place and time. Eventhough its brilliance, the album suffered of an unfair production (specially the mixing), a common evil with most of the other releases of that timeframe. Those minor flaws won't prevent you to enjoy this release in its repackaged and remastered form. As a bonus you'll get the Adipocere 7" EP which in fact is a welcomed addition to the already brilliant collection of morbid hymns. Too bad if you miss the opportunity to have this in your collection. Rumors say the band is active again, we will have to wait and see if they have retained the spark after all these years of inactivity.
No estamos ante un disco reciente, sino ante una reedición de un clásico de 1992 nada más y nada menos. Una vez más como ya ocurriera con FUNEBRE, ABHORER y DISGRACE, Xtreem Music nos regala un nuevo lanzamiento de sus Xtreem Cult Series, dedicadas a recuperar discos olvidados del underground de principios de los noventa cuando el Metal Extremo estaba en plena efervescencia.
Esta vez le ha tocado el turno a MORPHEUS DESCENDS, un grupo con un sonido muy particular y fiel seguidor de IMMOLATION, INCANTATION y los primeros VITAL REMAINS. Es decir, estamos ante un Death Metal crudo y pesado, cargado de medio tiempos, de melodías oscuras y de riffs mastodónticos que nos proporcionan odas a la muerte de manera continua. Creados a principios de los noventa, la reedición que nos ocupa de este grupo americano auténticamente old-school, recoge las dos primeras obras de su trayectoria: el EP "Adipocere" de 1991 y el debut "Ritual Of Infinity" de 1992. La trayectoria de este grupo, formado por miembros de MORTICIAN, MAUSOLEUM o los propios INCANTATION, no duraría mucho más. El tiempo suficiente para editar otro álbum, "Chronicals Of The Shadowed One", y otro EP, "The Horror Of The Truth" separándose definitivamente en 1998.
He de reconocer mi completo desconocimiento hacia este grupo (lamento mi ignorancia). De hecho encontrar información sobre ellos es bastante difícil, pero ello no es óbice para no alabar la decisión de la reedición de este disco. Sinceramente, siempre he considerado que el Death Metal pecaba (y peca) de una cosa, la sobresaturación. Esto ha llevado a que las bandas se multipliquen por miles no dejando de ser copias de otras previamente existentes, o repitiéndose a sí mismos hasta la saciedad. MORPHEUS DESCENDS no hacen nada nuevo, visto desde la perspectiva actual, pero si nos trasladamos a 1991, cuando MORBID ANGEL eran dioses, y la escena Death Metal estaba muy activa, pero no saturada, este grupo consigue llamar la atención, por su manera clásica, oscura y mórbida de ver el Death Metal.
Temas como "Immortal Coil" o "Accelerated Decreptitude" demuestran que no hace falta hacer una exhibición de gran técnica para crear una atmósfera de auténtico Death Metal. Un sonido añejo, poderoso y a la vez sucio, ayuda a crearnos una idea de lo que pasaba por la mente de este grupo en sus inicios. Simplemente hacer buena música, y a ser posible transmitir sensaciones, y vaya si lo consiguen. Sobre todo en "Ritual Of Infinity", dónde la voz de Jeff Riemer suena tan tenebrosa que creerás que la muerte esta suspirando detrás de ti. Los temas del EP "Adipocere", con Craig Campbell como vocalista, suenan en la misma línea de oscuridad y tenebrismo, pero con unas voces más rasgadas que le quitan parte de su oscurantismo. El sonido es el mismo, pero las composiciones que no se repiten con respecto a "Ritual Of Infinity" ("Triformed Limbs", "Stigmatic Crucifixion" y "Residual Kill") cambian en favor de pasajes un poco más caóticos pero igual de poderosos. No obstante es tan notable como su posterior lanzamiento.
En definitiva, nunca es tarde para descubrir grandes bandas de épocas pasadas, e iniciativas como las Xtreem Cult Series nos permiten conocer un puñado de discos que en su momento fueron obras de culto, y que si no fuera por su reedición actual, a muchos nos pasarían desapercibidos. Así que ya sabéis, si queréis tener un pedacito de la historia del Death Metal americano, haceros con una copia de "Ritual Of Infinity". Muy recomendable.
