Re-issue with 3 bonus tracks and remastered sound of the 1st album from ‘96 by this legendary finnish band, considered the small brothers of DEMIGOD and hailing form the same town. This is one of the best finnish Death Metal albums from the 90’s!! A classic!!
Ah, Finland! A land of great woodlands and snow-covered mountains with happy little reindeer running about! At one point in time during the 1990’s, this country put out some Death Metal bands that have aged like a fine wine over time. Finnish Death Metal bands like DEMILICH, DEMIGOD, DEPRAVITY and CONVULSE have seen a resurgence in popularity in the contemporary Metal community. Now even people at the American Nihilist Underground Society (ANUS) hail their transcendence from Death Metal to something more technical and furthermore a purer form of the genre.
ADRAMELECH is the band that gained the inhuman drumming skills behind DEMIGOD’s milestone album “Slumber of Sullen Eyes”, Seppo Tattila, who picked up the guitar for ADRAMELECH during “Psychostasia” in 1996 with drums and vocals provided by Jarkko Rantanen, who would later split off from ADREMELECH to play live drums and vocals for DEMIGOD in 1998. If you are completely confused by what I just said, fret not, that’s only normal.
ADRAMELECH does not sound so much like DEMIGOD but they are very familiar to DEMILICH but if the vocals were still somewhat human and there was a lot more melody. There is still a lot of technical slamming going on that really encompasses the richness of the Finnish Death Metal sound during the 90’s. “Psychostasia” is a forgotten about album that is long-overdue for the spotlight. This reissue from Xtreem Music included 3 bonus tracks of ADRAMELECH performing “Heroes in Godly Blaze” live as well as “Seven” and “The Sleep of Ishtar”, which both appeared on their 1998 EP “Seven”.
There’s really nothing to criticize about this album, being as this album is more of a polished up artifact than something new being offered. It is certainly a lot easier to comprehend than “Nespithe” because “Psychostasia” is nowhere near how bizarre that record was. But I would say this album is more of a treat for DEMIGOD fans than DEMELICH fans but really this reissue is a true gift unto all Death Metal fans.
Creo que no estoy descubriendo nada a nadie si digo que el disco que nos ocupa no es, ni mucho menos, una novedad. Es más, esta es la segunda vez que el álbum se reedita tras su estreno, vía Repulse Records, allá por el año 1996 y la posterior puesta en circulación en el 2003, por parte de Blackend Records.
Así las cosas, mucho ha llovido desde que “Psychostasia” dejó de estar disponible para el pequeño gran público del Metal Extremo en cauces ordinarios y asequibles, al margen de los caprichos de Ebay y similares plataformas inflacionistas, por lo que los amantes del Death Metal de la vieja escuela, ya podemos dar palmas con las orejas.
Brevemente, apuntar que “Psychostasia” supone el primer lanzamiento en formato de larga duración del cuarteto de Loimaa ADRAMELECH, tras la publicación de dos demos y dos EPs imprescindibles, como son “Spring Of Recovery” (1992) y “The Fall” (1995). Incido en el dato de que la banda es oriunda de Loimaa; pequeña ciudad al sur de Finlandia, y hogar de las deidades deathmetaleras DEMIGOD; banda a la que ADRAMELECH siempre ha estado irremediablemente ligada, siendo su principal credencial, además de vara de medir, por haber crecido a su sombra (pese a datar sus orígenes de prácticamente las mismas fechas). No obstante, tres de sus componentes (los multiinstrumentistas Jarkko Rantanen y Ali Leiniö, y el guitarrista Jussi Kiiski) han sido parte de ambas formaciones, bien en sus respectivos “nucleos duros” o bien como músicos de sesión para directo.
Dicho lo anterior, inevitablemente, sobra decir que ADRAMELECH, siempre han sido considerados como los “hermanos menores de DEMIGOD”, así como por sus particularidades sonoras, unos alumnos aventajados de sus compatriotas y coetáneos DEMILICH. A título particular, decir que personalmente la discografía de ADRAMELECH es la que me parece más sólida de las tres bandas, aún con el handicap de haber cambiado sustancialmente de formación; pues si bien en sus más emblemáticas grabaciones permanecía el mismo “núcleo duro”, sus componentes iban variando en las funciones de guitarra, bajo, batería o voz.
En este “Psychostasia“, así como en los EPs precedentes, ADRAMELECH juegan una baza fundamental que configuró la personalidad de su propuesta sonora, diferenciándola del resto de la escena, que no es otra que el peculiar registro vocal de Jarkko Rantanen, a la postre batería de la banda, que vocaliza combinando registros guturales y susurrados, confiriendo a los temas un aspecto que fluctúa entre lo brutal y lo espiritual, con un personalísimo aire fantasmagórico.
Al margen del tema vocal, ¿qué es lo que nos vamos a encontrar en este álbum? Sin duda, y por encima de todo, las oscuras melodías que definieron la escena deathmetalera finlandesa de los 90, marcando la diferencia con sus coetáneos suecos y, sobre todo con la vorágine procedente de los States. ADRAMELECH potencian el juego a dos guitarras, donde cada uno de sus hachas desempeña indistintamente el papel rítmico o solista, según lo requiera cada composición, formando un dúo (valga la coña) dinámico e impredecible, perfectamente arropado por una sección rítmica de bajo y batería que, no limitándose a los patrones estándar del género, coquetean con patrones rítmicos retorcidos y caprichosos, que tanto recuerdan en ocasiones a los ya citados DEMILICH. Mucho contratiempo, mucha escala de reminiscencia egipcia, mucha síncopa y sobre todo, mucha clase y experimentación.
La producción de “Psyschostasia” es una gozada para los amantes de los viejos sonidos orgánicos y naturales. No hay saturación de pistas, rimbombancias ni artificios que no puedan ser reproducidos en directo, salvo algún puntual solo doblado; pero en cualquier caso, el disco suena fresco y directo tanto en ejecución como en sonido, en una grabación que, si la escuchas con cascos y no te fijas en qué oído te has puesto cada auricular, no tardas en saber qué guitarrista suena por cada lado, pues cada uno interpreta los riffs con su propio rollo y naturalidad; cosa hoy por hoy impensable con la sobreproducción del 90% de las grabaciones de estudio.
Destacar algún tema del disco es francamente complicado, pero para no extendernos y hacer una “guía de escucha”, únicamente mencionar algunos de los momentos más memorables del disco, que merecen ser disfrutados, como las míticas paradas y break que arrancan el riff principal de “Heroes In Godly Blaze“; primer tema del disco, donde como ya anticipaba, los dos guitarristas lo dan todo en un frenético toma y daca donde se intercambian el papel rítmico y solista, machacan un mismo riff y posteriormente se desligan doblando las líneas melódicas… vamos, un no parar que se desarrollará paulatinamente durante los escasos 34 minutos de metraje del disco.
Perfecto ejemplo de lo anterior lo encontramos también en “Seance Of Shamans“, donde hay un perfecto balance entre partes “pisadas” y “desligadas”, en las que las las guitarras confluyen para crear caprichosos acordes compuestos; o la que da título al disco, Psychostasia”, con una desbordante alternancia rítmica entre clásicos ritmos bombo-caja (llamémosles tupatupa para entendernos, jajaja), con medios tiempos y abruptas bajadas de intensidad; todo ello envuelto en un halo malévolo y evocador de antiguas deidades y civilizaciones, como perfectamente trasluce el artwork de Turkka Rantanen.
Mención aparte merece “The Book Of Worm“; tema que por derecho propio juega en la liga de grandes del género, con su mítico inicio acústico y arranque a medio tiempo con épicas guitarras atresilladas que bien podían haber rubricado bandas coetáneas de la escena sueca en clásicos como “The Gallery” o “The Jester Race“; si bien, aquí entra el punto diferenciador de ADRAMELECH, que dando una de cal y otra de arena, enlazan estas partes más asequibles con riffs de dibujos carpichosos y retorcidos en los que fuerzan la métrica al límite al más puro estilo DEMILICH, tal como queda de manifiesto en piezas como en la trepidante “As The God Succumbed“.
Termino las menciones al repertorio, refiriéndome brevemente a dos cortes: “Mythic Descendant”, al que tengo especial cariño pues fue el tema con el que conocía a la banda, hace casi dos décadas en un recopilatorio “Repulsive Assault” de Xtreem Music: un tema oscuro, pesado y brutal donde los haya, donde la susurrante voz de Jarkko nos sumerge en un submundo de pesadilla y ocultismo. Y no quiero dejar de referirme a “Across The Grey Waters“, canción que cierra el disco y cuyo riff principal es una clara llamada al del tema inicial del disco, cerrando un círculo perfecto que, a un servidor, se le antoja demasiado breve (al igual que el resto de la discografía de estos finlandeses que parece estar dosificada en pequeñas raciones, que siempre dejan con ganas de más).
Esta reedición, remasterizada y que conserva el artwork original, verá la luz oficialmente para cuando se publiquen estas líneas, y viene con el añadido de incorporar tres bonus tracks en directo en los que la banda da una buena muestra de lo que venía anticipando acerca de la naturalidad de la grabación del disco, cuya ejecución puede ser perfectamente trasladada a un concierto sin que se pierda detalle alguno.
Un consejo: no dejéis pasar la oportunidad de haceros con un ejemplar de este disco; una de las piedras angulares del Death Metal finlandés de los 90. Sin duda, y no me cansaré de decirlo, la escena más injustamente infravalorada del panorama metalero de los últimos 30 años y que, hoy en día, dos décadas después, no deja de asombrar a propios y extraños con la gran cantidad de joyas que se pulieron en la tierra los mil lagos y que merecieron gozar de una infinita mejor respuesta por parte del público. En fin… dicen que más vale tarde que nunca…
Ob es wirklich notwendig war, das Werk “Psychostasia” von Adramelech ein weiteres Mal zu veröffentlichen?
Finnischer Death Metal wird ja vorrangig mit Bands wie Disgrace, Purtenance oder Demigod in Verbindung gebracht. Aber auch Adramelech entstammen jener Region.
Was die Finnen auf ihrem offiziellen Debüt ablieferten, war aber schlicht und einfach herkömmlicher Todesblei. Bei Xtreem sieht man dies scheinbar etwas anders, erschien doch das Original schon auf dem Vorgängerlabel Repulse.
Adramelech verfransen sich jedoch keinesfalls in irgendwelchem Gefrickel, sondern zelebrieren old school Death Metal direkt auf den Punkt, ohne aber nur auf Tempo aus zu sein. Vielmehr geht es mitunter gar etwas tragend zu und somit schafft man einen soliden Spagat zwischen Melodie und Aggression.
Was allerdings auf “Psychostasia” fehlt, ist ein eigener Stil, der für Wiedererkennungswert sorgt, oder mal durch unerwartete Passagen aufgelockert wird. Keine Ahnung, woran das liegt, aber bis hier etwas hängenbleibt, dauert es schon eine ganze Weile.
Überragende Ideen sind nicht vorhanden, lediglich der gelegentlich kurze Einsatz einer Akustikgitarre kann im geringen Maße für Abwechslung sorgen.
Um die Sache trotzdem noch etwas attraktiver zu machen, wurden drei zusätzliche Bonustracks angefügt, die für Live-Aufnahmen erstaunlich sauber und dennoch mit der nötigen Rauheit umgesetzt wurden.
Will im Klartext heißen: “Psychostasia” ist ok, aber auch nicht mehr. Der finnische Untergrund brachte weit bessere Perlen hervor, womit die berechtigte Frage bleibt, ob man sich dieses Werk wirklich zulegen muss.
Zudem bleibt abzuwarten, ob die Jungs überhaupt noch einmal aktiv werden, ist es doch schon verdammt ruhig um Adramelech geworden.
Klar, Rerelease alter Alben sind eine streitbare Sache. Oft schwankt es da zwischen wünschenswert und unnötig, meistens kommen die Neuauflagen lieblos, schnell zusammengeschustert und dem gebotenen Material unwürdig rüber.
Hier allerdings finde ich den Rerelease von Xtreem sehr gelungen da es mir als zu spät geborener die Möglichkeit gibt die alten Scheiben zu entdecken und ansatzweise mitzufühlen wie es "damals" gewesen sein muss als diese Scheiben zum ersten Mal rauskamen.
"Psychostasia" erblickte 1996 das Licht der Welt und war nach zwei Demos und zwei Eps die erste Full Length der Finnen. Und was konnten die Finnen zu dieser Zeit am besten? Richtig, Deathmetal, zusammen mit ihren skandinavischen Nachbarlandern.
Und so gibt es genretreuen Deathmetal finnischer Prägung aus den 90ern, der damals bestimmt für das eine oder andere feuchte Höschen gesorgt hat. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Veteranen aus der Zeit spüre ich bei Adramelech noch eine leichten amerikanischen Einfluss. Die heiseren Vocals habe ich in dieser Form auch noch nicht so oft gehört und heben sich wohltuend von der Standardmasse ab. Mich persönlich erinnert "Psychostasia" an die Frühwerke von Amorphis, vor allem wegen dem überwiegend vorhandenen Midtempo und den melodischen Gitarrenläufen.
Am organisch warmen Sound wurde nicht viel gedreht, warum auch. So und nicht anders sollte authentischer Deathmetal aus dem Land der tausend Seen klingen.
Xtreem hat die Neuauflage noch mit 3 Livetracks in äusserst guter Qualität aufgewertet, somit steht dem Trip "back in Time" nichts mehr im Wege. Tolles Album, wer es noch nicht hat bekommt hier die Gelegenheit zuzuschlagen und wird es nicht bereuen. Eine Geschichtsstunde der besten Art und ein Rerelease das Sinn macht.
Adramelech was one of those names that I have heard being thrown around since my fascination with Finnish death metal began 2 years ago, and having encountered the likes of Demilich, Convulse and Purtenance, it wasn’t until this year that I finally chance upon their debut, Psychostasia. Originally released in 1996, this year sees Xtreem Music reissuing their debut full length album, sure to please fans of the genre.
With the band often being compared to Demilich, it wasn’t until finally hearing Psychostasia for the first time that I truly understood what that meant. The opening riffs of Heroes in Godly Blaze quickly reminds one of the aforementioned, but that is not where the comparison ends, as Adramelech ensures a brutal listening experience with that grinding tone. The details on Psychostasia, down to the tone of the snare on the album are all extremely reminiscent of releases such as Nespithe, and it is no wonder that comparisons to Demilich are drawn. Even the rather complex lead guitar lines that are aplenty on the album sees such comparisons being brought about.
At the same time, the band also displays their similarity with other compatriots, most notably with bands such as Purtenance and Convulse, with the dense and dark atmosphere that is evoked on Psychostasia. This is all the more so with the inclusion of some of the more more melodic moments on tracks like The Book of the Worm, and although shows a slightly mellower side of the band, they manage to retain that haunting atmosphere.
With the quality of the material on Psychostasia, it is no wonder why Adramelech has come to be known along with the likes of Convulse, Demigod and Depravity as some of the classics of Finnish old school death metal.
The 2014 reissue by Xtreem Music sees the label including three live tracks as bonus tracks, and it is on these tracks where the band also shines, displaying their tightness playing as a unit, without compromising on the crushing intensity that is on their studio material.
