1st full length album by this spanish band of heavy and dark Death/ Doom that will please every fan of bands like OPHIS, ASPHYX, NECROS CHRISTOS, EVOKEN, early PARADISE LOST, DETERIOROT, MY DYING BRIDE...
Sporting a stunning wild swamp like artwork, Prehuman is the Xtreem Music released debut album from Spanish doom/death five piece Onirophagus!
With artwork that eye catching you’d imagine that the music within must be something special. Something special is what you get too… a monolithic slab of doom/death that fires colossal riffs up high ans then lets them crash back down to earth with a crushing burning intensity! That isn’t all though, vocally front-man Paingrinder pounds out some truly delicious old school death metal growls whilst the band treat us to more slowed down sinister riffs and methodical drumming and bass play!
That isn’t the sum of all of Onirophagus’s parts though and when the band up the pace a groove drenched catchy stoner doom style comes into effect, tempering the bands ferocity superbly. Not only that but the band are also capable of upping their doom/death intensity too and battering out a barrage of carnage fueled riffs and thunderous drumming! If that isn’t enough then the sombre acoustic interlude Aeger with its wind swept almost black metal aesthetic too it adds just another notch to the bands already chipped bed post!
A truly superb slab of sledge hammer heavy darkened doom/death barbarity, Prehuman must be experienced!
Personalmente lo he disfrutado mucho.
To be honest, I didn't really look at the info about this release before pressing play, and was halfway through the album convinced about this was a re-release of yet an obscure Spanish band, that never gained the deserved attention, when the album was released during the mid-nineties, now resurrected by Dave Rotten and Xtreem Music. So I was quite astonished when I saw that this was a brand new recording by a band, which was formed as late as 2011, damn. The opening of the album's first track 'Baikal' cheats a bit as it leads the thoughts towards METALLICA's 'Hit The Lights', though that impression is soon shot down with the downtuned riffing, the bleak and doomy atmosphere and the pace together with the grim growl from the pits of hell. I am quite surprised about how well the songs and the album is crafted, one of the usual pits for a Death / Doom band is monotonous songs and that pit is ONIROPHAGUS tip toeing around without getting to near the edge. They start of quite gloomy and slow, speaking of pace now, delivering the music of utter dark and melancholic atmospheres, together with a tad of horror, just take a listen to 'Discordia' and enjoy the lovely references to AUTOPSY. Though track number four kills a bit of the momentum of the album for me, an intermezzo of 2:31 minutes of classical guitar, that really doesn't lead onto a second part of the album, the prior track 'Feverish' connects much better with 'Nocebo' than the classical guitar, a bit of a shame for the full experience. But this is still the most thought through and well done Death / Doom Metal album I've heard in quite some years from a new band, this is a stellar release that takes us right back to the heydays of the glorious genre, that have died quite a bit. The Spaniards have the whole package, they hit the right bleak atmosphere from the start and keeps it on with a few good twists, pace wise we are getting the whole register as well, from dragging slow doominess to fastpaced doublebass drumming and a grinding snaredrum, when they are going berserk, all molded perfectly into the form ONIROPHAGUS has cast. "Prehman" is almost to good to be true for a debut album in these days, as one should think one had heard it all, at least once, though ONIROPHAGUS is handling the music and the genre, just as natural and equilibristic and excessive as Messi is handling the football!
All the songs on this album have a very strong element of doom , though sometimes sub from deathmetal genre is still rare to find , especially bands that actually play a total of doom . Giant doom ' Asphyx ' total plays doom yet , still a lot of plays and oldschool thrashy elements in his music , possibly ' Coffins ' death- doom band from Japan is the most prominent in this year brought in a pure Death Doom release new album in July. But when I hear what is being offered ' Onirophagus ' in this first full-length album , we were reminded of the beginning of the album ' Paradise Lost ' or ' My Dying bride ' that many pure plays death- doom style , although the two bands change their music style on the album next . Some Riff death of ' Autopsy ' and ' Supuration ' also found in this album .
Album ' Prehuman ' has 7 Track length , only the song ' Aeger ' which has a duration of 2 minutes more , while other songs have a duration of 7 to 8 minutes . Of musical structure shown ' Onirophagus ' on this album , they always put in the beginning of the track element of doom and death element is dominant in mid- track . They also incorporate elements of brutal in some of their songs . ' Onirophagus ' managed to balance the elements of doom and death in every track . And because of that , we think they are playing a Death - Doom well .
Although Collaboration ' Death - doom ' many accompany all tracks on this album , but if you hear a few times , it feels better to deathmetal , because in our opinion , Style sound is crucial here , maybe ' Onirophagus ' try something else , with many incorporating elements a more modern sound into this album , so what is expected to hear the raw sound that seemed typical noisy doom death can not be perceived in this album .
' Onirophagus ' is still relatively new in the metal scene . Formed in 2011 , and released the Ep that many well received in 2012 . ' Onirophagus ' formed in Barcelona , Spain . Album ' Prehuman ' was released on 1 September 2013 through the label Xtreem Music Records ' .
Conclusion that . ' Onirophagus ' bring a new taste to enjoy music by Death - doom collaboration combined with a more modern style that sounds more simple and simple to enjoy. It also broke a view that Death - doom style is a style of music that is very difficult to enjoy. But ' Onirophagus ' brings Death - doom towards a more innovative and can be enjoyed by the fans of Metal in general .
After the EP "Defiler Of Hope" which received a good welcome from the fans of Doom / Death Metal, the Spanish band ONIROPHAGUS has announce the release of their first studio album by the end of this September. The Spanish band are known for a style of metal that looks very close to the group as MY DYING BRIDE, HYPOCRISY, or the first phase of existence of PARADISE LOST. This first album sounds very promoter.
The style played by ONIROPHAGUS experienced its golden age in the early 90s. And few groups have continued in this mysterious genre of Metal. Heavy tempos and ultra-brutal riffs characterize this album, also melodic and harmonic passages are a key element to complete the look of this band. But wait, this is a very general description that I gave up now take a listen to one album. But having listened to it again and deciphered all the tracks, I must admit this is a very rich album by the gross way that was made with and the use of the classic elements of Doom / Death while maintaining modern sounds of that genre.
Through the songs "Baikal", "Feverish" and "Nocebo" I noticed a progressive approach in most of the arrangements. A very heavy passage at the beginning of every song evolves to give way to more accelerated sentences. The influence of MY DYING BRIDE feels very present, but the Spanish musicians know well how to operate without falling into the copy and paste. "Aeger" is a track that marks the center of this album; a wonderful acoustic passage surprised me and hides behind the origins of the members of this band. All sounds are within an album marked by a remarkable art work which cannot truly reflect its name "Prehuman".
Doom / Death Metal is a style that remains untapped and it is hardly swallowed by Metal fans in general. So it is still difficult to produce a good album in this context, except ONIROPHAGUS that are there with a very good album with a well production.
