Comment:
Long awaited 2nd album by this already cult swedish band that plays an infernal, aggresisve and putrid Death Metal the ancient way with influences in the vein of GROTESQUE, SADISTIC INTENT, AUTOPSY, KAAMOS...
I still remember the debut CD "Impious Sacrilege" of the Swedish death metal horde Verminous released via Xtreem Music in 2003. It was a solid slab of old school death/black metal worshipping the sound of legendary names like Entombed, Unleashed, Grave, etc. Ten years later here they come again with the second album titled "The Unholy Communion".
One thing becomes clear right after the start of the opening track (not counting the intro) 'Keepers Of Chaos' - besides some minor line-up changes (bassist Simon Frodeberg is no longer in the band), the ten years long pause haven't changed Vermimous at all. Andreas Johansson (drums), Pelle Melander (guitars) and Linus Bjorklund (guitars/vocals) deliver nine tracks of dirty, raw and blasphemous Swedish death metal. "Unholy Communion" doesn't differ that much from its predecessor "Impious Sacrilege". Again your ears are ripped apart by fast and furious songs filled with venomous spite towards christian religion. Titles like 'I.N.R.I. (Iesus Nazarene Rex Insectus)', 'Glorious Sacrilege' or 'Immersed In Semen' speak enough for themselves. Verminous don't place all their bets entirely on the sheer speed - their tracks have lots of mid-tempo parts that give more groove to the overall brutality. 'In The Name' and 'Verminous Fluids - Part 2' are predominantely slow but this doesn't mean that they don't have the blood-thirsty power of the faster pieces. The production is on a good level and you will have no problem to hear what happens exactly with the guitar riffs or the drum patterns. Linus' vocals remind me of Entombed ("Clandestine" era) which in my book is a definitive plus.
So that's what is "The Unholy Community" - one piece of oldschool Swedish death/black metal paying tribute to the extreme heroes of the early 90's but released in 2013. Since there are many fans of the genre I'm sure Verminous' music will reach its audience. Check out also Verminous' EP " The Curse Of The Antichrist" with one new song and two covers of Nuclear Assault and Nihilist.
Unbound the wrath of hell, let it swarm and rip off his chains against the faintness of religious belief, entwining evil, destruction and loathing into one’s soon to be blackened soul. Chaos can be charming sometimes, though I won’t invite it to my door step even if it will offer candy, performing trick or treat. No need to verify the implications of that happening. I speak metaphorically but I am sure that most of you know what I mean. Back to our hellish guests from Sweden, the antagonists of every sort of sacred creed and decree, nasty oppressors wishing to overtake their place by suffering, this is the blackened Death Metal imperium of VERMINOUS, slimy, sick and it reeks. Abusing as being the reminiscent of the gross early 90s atrocious AUTOPSY, INCANTATION, SADISTIC INTENT or even the wrath of the Norse foul gods of IMMORTAL, this trio of maniacs had their decade of rest until the emergence of “The Unholy Communion”, via Xtreem Music. While not being close to be declared as imaginative or blasphemous renewal, VERMINOUS were able to shed some skin off, plunge a solid Death blow of utter pandemonium.
“The Unholy Communion”, at least for yours truly, is what I would call a primitive queasiness of extremeness. Nobody said that extreme Metal music has to be grotesque and profane right? But when it comes to true and raw old school Death Metal, its main vanity point is being utterly revolting yet also unconstructive. Agge’s grinding the life out of the blast beats on the drums, might display his skin job as sloppy but that is thanks to the poor productions values of the entire release. It might sound old school yet I believe that it was mistreated. Fundamentally, he is like a lifeless, piece of machinery, there to perform with true might without looking back. Germaniac and Pelle Piss on the guitars are rattling the chains of existence with hellish, yet simply put, riffing according to the genre’s black book. There are times when one of them ignites with a slashing solo display, yet I would wish those would have been frequent. Germaniac as a vocalist is pretty neat, sharp edged growler, similar to Abbath of IMMORTAL yet with a bit of depth to his gruesomeness. “Glorious Sacrilege” really got things started, flashing towards Thrash but with the rawness of pure Death infestation, so devilish and untamed. Catchy chorus, evil induced mayhem, nice main riff, ought to like that one. “Immersed in Semen” is a sick bastard, anti-religious intent, a slight diversity within the deathly primates but keeps the spirit going. “Hordes ov Vermin” and “Keepers of Chaos” erupt as two of the album’s main blasphemers, great riffing, a small token of solo display, sometimes it felt Crusty, yet abiding by the Death Metal code nonetheless.
This one didn’t give me a hard time; it is a blackened in your face kind of straightforwardness, without trends or modern methods to keep it alive. VERMINOUS are the bastards of the underworld, creators of mayhem with Death Metal wishes. Though aboriginal, and not original at all, I still liked the effort. If you liked it hideous, check out these boys.
When I was watching the VERMINOUS show at Kiltown Deathfest 2012 I thought that it would be really cool if those guys would record a new album. Fortunately they did and the result is overwhelming. Exactly ten years after the killer debut "Impious Sacrilege" those Swedish ghouls unleashed its successor called "The Unholy Communion". And I'm really pleased to tell you that this album is even better than the crushing debut. Not much changed in all those years, they just brought everything a step further. VERMINOUS still delivers vicious, ripping old school Death Metal, but they are not just another ENTOMBED / DISMEMBER clone. Their sound has nothing to do with that typical Swedish Death Metal style, it's more a powerful and blasphemous mixture of early European and early US Death Metal. VERMINOUS' sound is closer to KAAMOS and DEGIAL than to any other of their country mates and so they are much darker, more wicked and harsher than the average Swedish Death Metal band. Apparently they improved their songwriting abilities without getting rid of its rawness, diabolicalness and brutality. Each of the 9 unholy compositions is an awesome, well arranged and well played hymn of darkened Death Metal supremacy. VERMINOUS clearly beats the pants off most of those new old school bands which are around nowadays although most of them are pretty cool. "The Unholy Communion" is just a notch above most contemporary releases. So don't hesitate and get this masterpiece at once. HAIL VERMINOUS!!!
