Zwanzig Jahre lang war es still um PURTENANCE. Die finnische Death Metal Legende hat sich nach ihrem Debütalbum 1992 aufgelöst. “Member Of Immortal Damnation” wurde erst unlängst von Xtreem Music, zusammen mit der ersten und einzigen EP “Crown Waits The Immortal” neu aufgelegt. So schließt sich der Kreis, denn der Vorgänger von Dave Rottens Label, Drowned Productions, war seinerzeit auch für die Erstauflage beider Scheiben verantwortlich. Da war es auch nur logisch, dass PURTENANCE das erste Lebenszeichen nach 20 Jahren Ruhe auch wieder dort veröffentlichen werden.
Mittlerweile zum Trio geschrumpft, sind nur noch Drummer Harri Saro und Gitarrist Juha Rannikko aus der ursprünglichen Besetzung übrig. An Bass und Gesang findet sich mit Ville ein neues Mitglied in der Familie. In dieser neuen Konstellation haben PURTENANCE nun vier neue Lieder, zuzüglich In- und Outro in 17 Minuten eingezimmert.
Auf “Sacrifice The King” hört man sicherlich den Band-eigenen Stil noch heraus. Immer wieder kommen finstere und typisch finnische Melodien, Leads und Soli durch und erzeugen die richtige Atmosphäre. Gerade “Demon Gods” gewinnt durch diese griffigen Momente deutlich. Doch leider fehlt es auf dieser EP ein wenig an den irren Ideen, die “Member Of Immortal Damnation” zu etwas speziellem, ja, besonderem gemacht haben.
Fast würde ich das neue Material “stumpf” nennen. Das ist aber nur bedingt ein schlechtes Attribut. Denn trotz einer gewissen Grobschlächtigkeit sind PURTENANCE immer noch brutal und irgendwie unterhaltsam. “Sacrifice Of Your Life” wechselt schön zwischen Groove und brachialem Geholze und der bereits erwähnte Schnitzelhammer “Demon Gods” macht gerade durch seine plumpe Simplizität ordentlich Spaß.
An die alten Glanztage kann “Sacrifice The King” dennoch nicht anknüpfen. Und auch gegen die aktuelle Konkurrenz aus dem eigenen Land, Stench Of Decay, Krypts, Swallowed, um nur ein paar zu nennen, sehen PURTENANCE eher schwach aus. Bleibt abzuwarten, wie das nächste Material klingt. Kommt die Band wieder in ihre alte Form? Oder stagnieren sie in guter Durchschnittlichkeit? Eine spannende Frage in die Zukunft…
Después de haberles perdido la pista durante casi dos décadas tras la edición de “Member Of Inmortal Damnation”, la verdad es que la curiosidad por saber que tal sonaban las nuevas composiciones de los maestros del death metal Purtenance era máxima, y más si tenemos en cuenta que para este regreso bajo el título de "Sacrifice The King", han decidido cambiar a una de sus piezas clave, el vocalista Timo Häyrinen, en su lugar, el peso vocal de la banda ha recaído ahora sobre el vocalista y bajista Ville, que ha conseguido aproximarse bastante al brutal registro de su antecesor, dando así continuidad al sonido death metalero, que siempre ha predominado en la brutal propuesta del ahora trío finlandés.
"Sacrifice The King", se abre con un preludio instrumental, donde la guitarra de Juha Rannikko, consigue introducirnos junto al respaldo de unos teclados muy ambientales en unas atmósferas oscuras y densas, que constituirán el punto de partida desde el que arrancará "So Many Years Of Fear", un tema crudo, liderado por un ritmo cargado de intensidad junto a una dinámica lenta y cadenciosa, que poco a poco irá ganando en cuerpo y contundencia, gracias a las amenazantes líneas de bajo y a las brutales voces que harán desembocar el tema en una poderosa ráfaga death metalera a velocidad de vértigo, con las guitarras dibujando armonías diabólicas, demostrando que el trío sigue manteniendo intacta su voracidad y energía, centrándose en un tema cargado de rotundidad y agresividad en el que apenas hacen concesiones a la melodía, dando como resultado un corte en el que el trío dejan claras que las señas de identidad que fueron las protagonistas de su anterior etapa permanecen intactas.
Sin renunciar a la velocidad, y embarcándonos desde los primeros compases en un ritmo directo y arrollador se abre "Demon Gods", el que es sin duda el corte más seminal y extremo de "Sacrifice The King", con el bajista y vocalista Ville, empleando unas tonalidades más cavernosas y extremas, junto a los crujientes "blast beat" de batería que son los encargados de imprimir una brutalidad absoluta a unas partes rápidas, realmente demoledoras, que se verán fundidas con algunos breves pasajes más lentos, tras los que el guitarrista Juha Rannikko será el encargado de cerrar el corte.
Una de las caracterizas básicas en el sonido de los finlandeses, siempre fue la brutalidad más extrema y radical, que durante la década de los noventa, les valió el estatus de banda de culto, dentro del “underground” death metalero, es por ello que pese al tiempo transcurrido, el trío finlandés parece no haber perdido ni un ápice de su determinación a la hora de concentrarse en temas de corte brutal y arrollador, fundiendo su estilo más tradicional con unas letras "sucias" y "sangrientas", como en el caso de "Maniac", un tema que cuenta con las voces en primer plano, y que nos retrotrae a los tiempos pretéritos del death metal, en donde las voces eran prácticamente un instrumento más, sonando totalmente empastadas con una potente base rítmica, y desapareciendo únicamente durante el desarrollo solista de Juah Rannikko, antes de introducirnos en un final en él se irá elevando el nivel de velocidad progresivamente para cerrarse por todo lo alto.
Ardiente y corrosivo "Sacrifice Of Your Life", nos devuelve a los ritmos trepidantes, con las líneas vocales, a dos bandas, contestándose, mientras la base rítmica liderada por la portentosa batería de Harri Saro propone un tempo cuasi marcial, consiguiendo crear un ambiente denso y rugoso que irá inundando el tema en diferentes ocasiones, evitando que el corte caiga en una dinámica lineal y repetitiva.
Este breve regreso de apenas 17 minutos, de los maestros finlandeses se cierra con "Outro", un epílogo instrumental, que sirve como desconexión después de escuchar la tormenta sonora que suponen las cuatro nuevas composiciones de Purtenance, representando todo un oasis de paz después de haber sobrevivido a la dura descarga a la que han sido sometidos nuestros tímpanos.
Pese al tiempo transcurrido, los finlandeses parecen estar plenamente en forma y siguen mostrándose igual de rotundos y compactos que a principios de la década de los noventa, quizás para el gran público, su propuesta puede ser de difícil asimilación, pero lo cierto es que para los amantes de los sonidos más contundentes, su death metal "old school", puede ser muy atractivo, aunque quizás sus composiciones pueden sonar un poco faltas de innovación. Sin duda, si en su momento disfrutaste de temas como “The Lost Memories” , “Black Vision” o “Misery Of The Rebirth”, el nuevo material de los finlandeses no te va a defraudar.
La banda está actualmente trabajando en más material de cara a la edición de un futuro nuevo trabajo, que si todo sigue según lo previsto, tendría que ver la luz, durante los primeros meses de este año 2013.
Some might remember these guys from the land of the thousand lakes (or Finland for those who never listened to AMORPHIS). PURTENANCE released a 7" EP ("Crown Waits The Immortal") and just one fine album ("Member Of Immortal Damnation") twenty years ago on the Spanish underground label Drowned Productions (both re-released together on one CD along with the band's 1991 demo through Drowned's successor company Xtreem Music recently - Frank). Not many people will remember, but alas - that's underground... And those who remember surely do it with a good feeling in their rotten heart. But anyway - it is quite astonishing that they not only came back but even recorded some new stuff. Was it a wise decision? I definitely think so! "Sacrifice The King", their comeback-EP, sounds like it is still 1992. Grinding guitars, growling vocals, Swedish melodies and brutalized drums are the ingredients which, in combination with a better production than way back, make a very enjoyable Death Metal cocktail. Somebody might say: "Boring ols farts!" And I say: Yes, they are not the new Death Metal revolution. I'm sure they didn't even intended to be. But these four steam hammers are true to the bone and more brutal than any Metalcore band will ever be! To add up to that: every time I listen to "Sacrifice The King", I like it more and more... Especially 'Demon Gods' is for all of you, who still love the old Scandinavian Death Metal! Old school guys like me need to check PURTENANCE out
Die finnischen Holzhacker von Purtenance sind zurück und somit kommt einem da spontan in den Sinn: Todgeglaubte leben länger. Und in der Tat sind es gute 20 Jahre her, seit der letzten und leider auch einzigen Langrille von dieser Band, welche ja vor gut einem Jahr von Xtreem Music neu aufgelegt wurde.
Nachdem also für sehr lange Zeit Ruhe im Schacht war, so steht man nun mit aktuellem Material da. Zwar lediglich nur in Form einer kurzen MCD, den Fan der alten Schule wird dies aber sicherlich nicht weiter stören.
Denn auch nach Jahren der Abgeschiedenheit gehen Purtenance noch genau diesen stilistischen Weg, wobei die Produktion hier leicht dreckig gehalten wurde, und wenn man etwas nicht verlernt hat, dann ist es der gewohnt vielseitige Einsatz diverser Gitarrensolos.
Birgt “So Many Yearsa Of Fear” dabei noch eine deutliche Thrash Metal Kante, so übernimmt der Todesblei alsbald die komplette Führung und interessanterweise kann man sich dabei auch etwas steigern. Das beste Stück hört auf den Titel “Maniac”, welches recht trocken und zudem eingängig aus den Boxen pfeift, beim verbleibenden Material bedurfte es meinerseits hingegen einiger Besuche, bis auch jenes sich zu entfalten vermochte. So rumpelt es ordentlich durch die Songs und zieht man mal Intro und Outro ab, dann bleibt aber eben leider nicht viel.
“Sacrifice The King” lässt sich sicherlich zweifelsfrei als ein Werk dieser Burschen erfassen, trotzdem habe ich irgendwie etwas mehr erwartet. Sicherlich ist da die Zeit nicht stehen geblieben und so wäre es anderseits natürlich auch ungewöhnlich, würde man heute noch genauso klingen. So komme ich zu dem Entschluss, dass vorliegendes Stück Musik mit dem Debütalbum leider nicht mithalten kann. Ein guter Einstand ist zweifelsfrei zu bescheinigen, Zweifel bleiben aber dennoch, dass man hiermit für Gesprächsstoff sorgen kann.
