Awesome 2nd album by this spanish band featuring 4 out of the 5 members from OUIJA that plays a killer Black Metal in the vein of mythic bands from the 90's like MÖRK GRYNING, early SATYRICON, DISSECTION, SACRAMENTUM...
L’odeur du café qui envahit le bureau, ça n’a pas de prix. C’est les soldes, en plus, le moment peut-être de changer sa machine à liqueur noire. Utile quand on a l’habitude de se jeter sur la totalité des albums sortis récemment sous la dénomination « Black Metal ». C’est qu’il y en a un paquet. Alors Spellcraft, c’est un groupe qu’on aura eu l’occase de voir en Bretagne courant 2011 et ma foi, ce n’était pas trop mal. Personnellement, ça ne m’avait pas marquée des masses, mais mes goûts personnels s’orientant plus dans l’aspect radical et ultra-contrasté du Black Metal, pas évident. Malgré tout le leader a une belle présence scénique et une voix très underground, même un peu déroutante.
Et c’est pile poil ce qui se passe pour cet album « Yersinia Pestis » qui nous arrive en mai 2012, peu avant la saison estivale. Un Mic-mac de Black Metal ça certes… Voix, riffs, rythmique… tout colle. Mais, quelque chose d’étrange quand même, Spellcraft, ça n’est pas classique. Alors comment prendre la chose… je ne sais pas. Tout ce qui est Intro, outro, breaks, c’est très bien. Après, se faire à la voix est un passage indispensable. Ou plutôt, mixes des guitares quasi claires avec une voix d’outre-tombe presque à la Beherit si vous voyez ce que je veux avancer, ça fait un effet assez spécial. Alors pourquoi pas, car au moins c’est un groupe que l’on reconnaîtra de très loin mais je pense qu’ici c’est sans juste milieux, on aimera ou pas du tout.
Les plans sont ultra classiques sur tous les morceaux, rien qui surprenne réellement l’auditeur mis à part la voix. Quelques passages clairs plus doux marquent l’architecture de l’album et ma foi, c’est bien réfléchi à ce niveau comme sur « Stigma Dragon » par exemple, ou sur le suivant « Lilith’s Breath », dont les pas de départ rappellent l’armée du Mordor qui s’approche de Frodon et Sam avant que ceux-ci ne se planquent sous la couverture magique… bref (…blabla…). Ceci dit j’aime bien ce morceau, plus fin, simple et efficace, et la batterie est assez géniale là-dessus sans compter les chants en arrière-plan. Heureusement que « Taste the reptile’s Skin » reprend un tout petit peu cette qualité car « Negra Sangre », je n’ai pas accroché, banal pour une formation aussi originale que Spellcraft.
On a donc un beau travail ici, mes enfants, mais un peu jeune encore. Encore une fois plus qu’à espérer une suite car cette voix si spéciale, c’est quelque chose à utiliser avec expérience, poésie ( !) mais surtout avec parcimonie. De très belles idées, cependant, Spellcraft a plus d’un tour dans sa besace et ça se sent, rien que par l’écoute de l’épilogue « Shrouded by the Darkness » qui LA, révèle quelque chose dans l’idée d’une essence unique.
Esta vez con un cambio de sello de por medio, vuelven a editar después de cuatro años los oscenses Black metaleros SPELLCRAFT. El título asignado para este nuevo trabajo es "Yersinia Pestis". Con una línea en los temas compuestos para la ocasión, igual que en su anterior "Stirpe Obscura" de siete cortes, aunque en este último se le añade una intro de corte pagano llamada "Tierra Profanada" y una especie de desenlace con "Shrouded by the Darkness". Ocho proposiciones donde se nota a la banda con un paso más hacia adelante comparado a su anterior disco.
Creo que en esta ocasión han mantenido una producción más limpia que en la anterior ocasión, donde gana altura la sonoridad de la música. También donde puedes encontrar más matices en la instrumentación, claramente te hace disfrutar mejor de los pasajes melódicos que la banda presta constantemente a los ritmos rabiosos, como los cambios de ritmo expuestos , los tonos de voz de Midgard, que veo con más fuerza y mucha más labor en este último disco. Claramente la producción hace que disfrutes de uno de los pilares de esta banda que son las guitarras, por parte de Murcilag y Aldromk.
También al escuchar este nuevo trabajo veo una corriente más épica, que en su anterior asalto. Ya no solo por esa buena introducción que presenta el disco, tenemos un llamamiento de guerra en "Lillith's Breath", donde también entra en partes con posiciones de guitarra acústica, con un cierre en esta línea que deja un tema completo, también se puede ver en la pista que da nombre al disco, incluso lo acústico se puede ver en gran medida en "Taste the Reptile Skin" . También tenemos cortes cañeros, donde no se despega la melodía sueca, pero donde se demuestra la terrible plaga de esta banda como en "Alone in the Eternity", con un pasaje depresivo de por medio en el corte o la terrible "Negra Sangre".
Un trabajo laborioso, se nota el tiempo dedicado al mismo, cuatro años son cuatro años. De todas maneras sigo pensando y ya más a título de fan de la banda, que se debería juntar su otra parte OUIJA, para la creación de una banda de Black Metal que pusiera de patas arriba la escena en España en este estilo de BM que también es necesario. Para aquellos que los desconozcan, cuatro miembros de esta pertenecen también a OUIJA. Donde la línea que los separa de dedicación, buenas composiciones, etc. es bastante fina. Diluyendo la fuerza definitiva en dos como son SPELLCRAFT y los antes mencionados ¿No sería mejor un proyecto en común?. Pero que también son bienvenidos, claro esta. En conclusión otro paso más fresco y claro de esta banda.
Spain's Black Metal act Spellcraft continue to tell haunting stories with their sophomore effort 'Yersinia Pestis.' Usually seen as a traditional Black Metal act with raw screeching, tremolo picking, and corpsepaint galore, this effort feels like their branching out a bit more. Sure there are the traditional furious pieces like "Negra Sangre" that seem to go by faster than once would expect. But, there are also more Folk oriented pieces, such as the opening "Tierra Profanada" which includes acoustic sections, clean chants, and overall a much more effective 'storytelling' atmosphere that draws listeners much better than the typical Black Metal approach. As the album progresses the band does their best to merge the two together, such as the heavier introduction to "Yersinia Pestis" and then going into the clean vocal style again while still maintaining heavy guitars, but with more melody. On the downside, the clean vocals can sound quite wavering at times, almost like a goat singing. Whether or not this was done on purporse, it may toss aside some of the serious thoughts that fans once had about Black Metal.
Other tracks are more culturally influenced. 'Lilith's Breath' includes some Middle Eastern influence that one might expect from a group like Melechesh, but doesn't overdo it. "Shrouded By Darkness" invokes a violin and a classically dark atmosphere which is more effective in its few minutes of worth at giving off a feeling of creepiness as opposed to an average Black Metal track of four minutes which just screams away in the ear. True, the vocals have been faded out and are difficult to hear, but it forces one to listen and get sucked into the music rather than hear the first thirty seconds, know what the rest of the track will be like, and skip to something more innovative. In short, new fans of Spellcraft will find this effort quite enjoyable and more of a progressive step than previous efforts from other more home-based Black Metal groups, such as Setherial, while those familiar with the band will see 'Yersinia Pestis' as a way of the group becoming more unique without losing that original, raw sound that drew them in in the first place.
For every week that passes by I get to discover new and wonderful bands that I never heard of before. Spanish Spellcraft is one of these. Back in the 90s I had a pretty good overview of the Spanish black metal scene but somehow we came to a split around the Millennium and I lost touch with it. But now it is time to reacquaint me with that scene once again. I’ve already started with a couple of bands and I’ll continue with Spellcraft. This is black metal in the Dark Funeral/Marduk school of full on blast, beat them to a pulp school. I can fully appreciate this kind of black metal. There used to be a time when I almost couldn’t stand mid to slow tempo metal and all had to be speed for me to appreciate it. I’ve changed over the years but I still have a special spot in my metal heart for a metal that stops at nothing. This got my heart beating and my pulse racing.
