Re-issue of the mythic 1st and only album from '92 by this spanish Death Metal band. Includes their 3 demos from '91, '92 & '93 as well as an unreleased live track never recorded in studio!! All of them remastered. Contains new cover art (as well the original one) plus lyrics, photos and demo covers. For lovers of good old classic Death Metal in its purest form with influences in the vein of MASSACRE, MORBID ANGEL, early SEPULTURA, DEATH...
"Mallorca's Unbounded Terror was one of the very first Spanish death metal bands. It was formed from the ashes of band Toxic Waste, and after that they were called Putrefeact Monstruosity until April 1991, when they adopted the name Unbounded Terror. The band was promoted by legendary label Drowned Productions whose owner, Dave Rotten of Avulsed has been a very good friend of band's leader guitarist Vicente Paya since 1990. After releasing Nest of Affliction in 1992 the band was "frozen" for a while by Vicente because of the problems with the line-up. With the inclusion of a new member, singer Amon López, and the brothers David Garciolo (on drums) and Gustavo Garciolo (on guitars), Vicente founded a new doom project called Golgotha. After signing a deal with Drowned Productions and releasing the Caves of Mind EP, the project became permanent, replacing Unbounded Terror and effectively ending the band."
That's saved us some time! Admittedly, one of the things that's caused this review to be put off for so long is the simple fact that until recently, there just wasn't that much information about Unbounded Terror online. I'd heard "Nest Of Affliction" through a friend a great many years ago, but that's as far as my experience took me, which is hardly surprising considering how low-key the band was. But I digress, their first (and only) album has received a full re-release that boasts an impressive array of bonus material - twelve tracks worth, in fact. Simply put, the core of "Nest Of Affliction" remains for the most part completely unchanged bar the required 'volume boost' and the original mix seems to be almost completely unchanged. Whether this is for better or worse is entirely down to opinion, as some people such as myself quite enjoy the old school death metal production style in all of it's messy-yet-tight glory, whereas those who have been weaned on more recent (and in my professional opinion, rather overproduced) bands/albums could possibly be put off by the rather scratchy, thin guitars or piittery-pattery drums. That said, the core ten tracks of the album are still vicious beasts that easily ranks "Nest Of Affliction" amongst the likes of "Butchered At Birth", "Effigy Of The Forgotten" and even the almighty "Leprosy", and it shouldn't be overlooked because of its age, production or relative obscurity by any means. The bonus tracks however, though plentiful, are somewhat unfulfilling for the most part. Tracks 11 through to 14 boast the best of the bunch, with track 11 'Silent Scream' being an unreleased live track that was never recorded and tracks 12 to 14 coming from their 1993 demo which gives us a glimpse at what could have been had the band not disbanded follow it's recording. The remaining tracks however, are from their 1991 and 1992 demos that contain most (if not all) of the tracks on the core album itself, and while it's neat to hear these tracks in their rawer, 'prototype' forms, they ultimately fail to live up to their studio counterparts and do little more than to pad out the tracklisting. On top of this, the album's artwork has been completely redone and although it still looks pretty good, I must say that I'm a much bigger fan of the original art.
All in all, despite my gripes with the new artwork and some of the bonus material here, this is by far the definitive version of "Nest Of Affliction" (especially considering the fact that you'll probaby never find an original pressing) and fans of old school death metal would be absolutely idiotic to pass it up. Anyone who was a fan of their back in the day will definitely want to try this one as well considering the plethora of unreleased material present here too, and it stands as further proof - in my eyes at least - that bands had a hell of a lot more to be angry about back in the early ninties and made better music as a result. Check out this 2011 re-issue of "Nest Of Affliction", it's a great package.
Conforme va pasando el tiempo nos vamos encontrando con reediciones que se confirman como no del todo necesarias. En cambio había otras que se estaban otorgando como ineludibles y totalmente inexcusables pero que parecían que no terminaban de llegar. En el caso de la que vamos a hablar, tarde o temprano se iba a llevar a cabo pero por diversas causas o razones no terminaba de verse lanzada y editada. El caso es que ya está aquí desde finales del pasado año 2011 y cumple las expectativas de la gente que anhelaba el disponer de una grabación de éste calibre.
El nombre de Unbounded Terror no tiene que sonar desconocido o anónimo para quienes llevan ya bastante tiempo escuchando Death Metal y siguiendo lo que es el panorama extremo de éste país, pero a grande rasgos se podría hacer mención de que estamos enfrente a una de las primerizas bandas de Death Metal que se gestionó dentro de España y uno de los grupos más respetados del genero. La reedición que nos encontramos entre manos es la de su mítico y único álbum que la banda editó durante el año 1992, disco que conjuntamente con “Chaopula: Citadel Of Mirrors” de Necrophiliac y “From Far Beyond” de Feretrum son los primeros discos del estilo editados en éste país y que figurarán así en la historia del metal extremo patrio.
El disco viene totalmente remasterizado, con lo cual ha ganado mucho la grabación con éste nuevo empaque, gozando de mucha más potencia y agresividad si cabe a todo lo que realizaron allá por año 1992 en los Desgrabaciones Studios. Cuenta con una nueva portada, ofreciendo una imagen algo diferente a la original y que quizá este “avanzada” a lo que se hacía en la época en que se grabó y editó el álbum, quedándome personalmente con la inicial, pues representa mucho mejor todo en el entorno de “Nest Of Affliction”. Aparte de esto, se han permitido el lujazo de incluir todas las demos que registraron antes y después de la edición de “Nest Of Affliction”, a saber “Sarcastic Souls” (año 1991 previa al álbum y lanzada al mercado por Drowned Prod.) así como “Growing On Sorrow” (1992) y “Through The Dark Desesperation (1993) ambos posteriores al disco en cuestión y editadas en su momento en formato casero y con un mero propósito promocional. Amén de esto completa la edición un tema en directo “Silent Screams”.
Con todo esto se pueden sacar numerosas conclusiones sobre la evolución y la madurez que tornó a Unbounded Terror como una de las mejores bandas de Death Metal que ha salido de éstas tierras, con una grabación central que es esencial para conocer la historia del Death Metal español en una línea totalmente clásica, recordando a lo que pueden ser bandas como primeros Morbid Angel, primeros Death, antiguos Sepultura y bandas de ese pelaje. “Nest Of Affliction” se trata de un disco de corta duración (apenas sobrepasa la media hora), pero enorme en cuestión de intensidad y contundencia, perfectamente mezclando sus influencias procedentes del material tanto europeo como americano, con mucha oscuridad a la vez que excelentes partes a medio tiempo, muy pesadas y contundentes.
“Nest of Affliction” es el perfecto trabajo para conocer qué se inmiscuía en los inicios del Death Metal en España, 100% exportable, de una banda que degustaba muy buen gusto y dedicación por la música extrema. Esta reedición no es más que un pequeño (pero importantísimo) capitulo de lo que ha sido el Death Metal, pero que se consideraba totalmente necesario exponerlo y darlo a conocer a las nuevas generaciones que se muestren ávidas por ver que se cocía por aquellos primeros año de la década de los 90.
El grupo tras las grabaciones de todo éste material no dispuso de mucho más tiempo como grupo. ¿Causas?, básicamente debido a unos problemas en base a la estabilidad de la formación del grupo y que su líder Vicente Paya se encauzó en un proyecto con enfoque bastante diferente a lo que era Unbounded Terror. Este no era otro que Golgotha, quien formó inicialmente con gente de otra banda de la zona (Innertial Mass) y Amon López, con una vertiente más doomy y alejada de los sonidos estándar del Death Metal por el cual se movían Unbounded Terror.
Es para mí todo un orgullo presentaros la que es una de las bandas clave en nuestra escena nacional de todos los tiempos, fueron pioneros dentro de la escena underground nacional, cuando el Death Metal en España apenas se conocía y muy pocas bandas contemporáneas pueden asegurar que lo practicaban así de bien.
Aquí está la nueva re-edición de UNBOUNDED TERROR “Nest Of Affliction”, su único álbum del ’92, junto a sus 3 Demos, “Sarcastic Souls” del ’91, “Growing on Sorrow” del ’92 y “Through The Dark Desperation (Evil Laughs Stronger)” del ’93, más un tema inédito “Silent Scream”, grabado en directo y jamás plasmado en audio hasta ahora, todo un lujo. Por supuesto todo el material está remasterizado con la calidad que caracteriza a las “Xtreem Cult Series”, que está demás decirlo.
El pack está presentado con una nueva portada, pero tranquilos los nostálgicos que también está incluida la antigua, he incluso en el libreto interior están plasmadas las portadas de las 3 Demos, en formato casete, una maravilla visual innegable, para quien no tuvo la suerte de conocerlas.
Los halagos y frases llenas de buenas intenciones para describir este álbum pueden llegar a ser infinitas, y poder resumir la trayectoria y el trabajo de estos astros del Death Metal nacional, en esta crítica va a ser un trabajo difícil, y seguramente me deje en el teclado de mi pc más de una sensación sin explicar o expresar, pero es que es complicado y a la vez un motivo de alegría contar en un solo CD con todo el trabajo editado por estos Mallorquines.
Su música es Death Metal clásico en cada riff, en cada nota, en cada corte, brutalidad y muerte, con sus miedos ocultos, llena de tintes de maldad en estado puro y violencia en abundancia. Cuentan con las influencias de los más grandes del género, influjos que sepultan en sus canciones como auténticos maestros, como una alimaña adormecida esperando carne fresca o una bestia oculta en la oscuridad, como esa oscuridad que transmiten sus canciones.
Es una pena que UNBOUNDED TERROR no sigan en la brecha, entusiasmándonos con su música atemporal, a estas alturas podrían estar (o no quien sabe) en lo más alto de la escena. Este CD es el mejor ejemplo para oír, analizar y apreciar toda su evolución dentro del género, dejando más que patente su madurez como músicos para la época y situación en el tiempo en la que se encontraban, cuando todo esto surgió, como creadores de música bella y extrema como pocos.
Este es el momento y la hora de que el trabajo y el esfuerzo de UNBOUNDED TERROR no caigan en el olvido (como el de tantos otros) y formen parte de nuestra escena y nuestro mundo extremo como se merecen.
