2nd album by this legend from Chile with almost 20 years of history, loyal to their tradition of the most dark, dense, heavy and morbid Death Metal in the vein of bands like INCANTATION, DEAD CONGREGATION, IMMOLATION... a work that perfectly captures the macabre essence of the two first INCANTATION albums.
DOMINUS XUL are coming from Santiago, Chile and they have released “The Primigeni Xul (I condemned my enemies)” as a debut album and afterwards a compilation called “Nostrum Antiquos Dominus”. They were formed in 1992 under the name DOMINUS and they changed their name into DOMINUS XUL in 1998. After the Death of Danny Grave the band split up and most of the members formed MELEKTAUS. They reunite before some years and they released “To The Glory Of The Ancient Ones” under Xtreem Records.
From the first track, it sees what’s following. Their music is pure Death metal with lyrics characterized by Anti-Christianity, Death and darkness. Let’s put some details, here we have demonic riffing, doomed atmosphere and occult aesthetic through a personal feeling. The main influence of DOMINUS XUL are INCANTATION and some hints of MORBID ANGEL. They are managing their influences pretty good and they are keeping their personal style integer. The keys of their success are: professionalism, experience and conceptual strength, which are missing from many bands of their area. Tracks as “Burying the holy lies (manifesto of apostasy)”, “The secret of liquid arcane”, “I raise Lucifer”, “A tribute to the real knowledge”, “The ancient initiator(Bringer of light)” and “Elements against weakness” are tracks of excellent Death Metal. This Chilean band started life as Dominus in 1992, and 6 years later changed their name to Dominus Xul. They’ve been playing together in different variations for the past twenty years or thereabouts, and this is their first full-length album in thirteen years. Focusing on death metal, their themes include anti-Christianity, darkness and death.
The album punches a hole in you the moment it starts, bursting out of the speakers as if with a life of its own. It’s perfectly mixed a nothing is overwhelmed by anything else and it all seem to fit and to work well together. The obvious guitars are held in check by the bassist and drummer providing ample rhythm and speed for the growling guttural vocals and the occasional backing by other members.
This bombastic album blows you away from start to finish, with each of the songs sounding similar but also with their own differences. It’s really nice to hear the odd guitar riff and the key change as they solidly wok their way through each of the songs. Although at times they sound a little torturous as they rip through the chords in readiness for the return of the unintelligible vocals.
Every song is a perfectly formed piece of art, with the instrumentals and the vocals timed not to clash with one another. This is a definitive album that focuses the mind on what death metal is truly about. I could listen to this on repeat all day and always find something different to focus on, it’s that varied and layered in its sound.
Nuevo regreso de una de las bandas lideres en Chile. 13 años han hecho falta para poder disfrutar de un nuevo álbum de estos maestros del Death Metal concretamente desde su debut en 1998 titulado "The Primigeni Xul". Ahora regresan con nuevos cambios en la formacíon pero tan brutales como siempre.
To the Glory of the Ancient Ones! nos presenta 8 temas más intro en unos 40 minutos, de un intenso y oscuro Death Metal, algo asi como unos Incantation, Immolation o incluso Decrepit pero sin el termino "Brutal" es decir Death Metal muy oscuro, veloz, aplastante pero sin llegar al termino Brutal Death.
El álbum suena muy bien, sin ser una producción perfecta se escucha todo a la perfección, no tengo duda de que es el sonido que buscaba la banda para crear esa atmosfera oscura y "old school" que practican.
Asi pues poco más voy a decir sobre este autentico álbum de Death Metal furioso y satanico, si flipas con los primeros Immolation, Incantation hazte con el ya!!
Xtreem Music ha sido la encargada de editar este gran trabajo que destaca entre los muchos trabajos que se han realizado en este pasado 2011. No es para menos, sus más de 20 años en la linea de fuego lo demuestran... grandes Dominus Xul!!!!!!!
Chilijscy czciciele IMMOLATION i INCANTATION przybywają z nowym albumem. Coś ostatnio nie było słychać o DOMINUS XUL, których znam jeszcze ze starannie wydanych i zrealizowanych demosów. A że zespół ten, pomimo niezbyt może oryginalnej ścieżki twórczości, doceniałem, tym bardziej ciekaw byłem, czym zmasakrują na materiale „To The Glory Of The Ancient Ones”. Bo że masakrują, to słychać już po intrze w „Burying The Holy Lies”. Dwa brutalne wokale, rozjeżdżające na miazgę gitary i wtórująca im perkusja robią swoje. Pierwej szybkie tempo, a potem wolno mieląca, zacinająca charakterystycznie gitara. Weźmy taki „I Raise Lucifer”, toż to walec przecudny, jeden z lepszych numerów na płycie. Szczególnie nabiera uroku, gdy DOMINUS XUL wrzuca wyższy bieg i płynnie przechodzi na niższy. Następny w kolejce „A Tribute To The Real Knowledge” wręcz płynie w spokojnym walcowatym tempie, wzbogaconym o ponury mruczący wokal, choć te falujące gitary na koniec możnaby sobie darować. Później właściwie na pierwszy rzut uchem jest nieco jednostajnie, ale jak się dobrze wsłuchać, to jest to tylko złudzenie. Naturalnie w tego typu kanonadzie dźwięków trzeba być nie lada arcymistrzem, żeby za każdym razem stworzyć coś niesamowitego (IMMOLATION się udaje, ale arcymistrz jest jeden!), niemniej jednak DOMINUS XUL się stara. Kolejne utwory balansują tempami, nie zapędzają się w kozi róg hiperszybkimi riffami, wokale mogłyby być bardziej różnorodne, przydałoby się nieco wrzasków w paru momentach. A muzyka fragmentami dalej wręcz płynie, jak w „Dethroning The False Father”. DOMINUS XUL nie przegięli z czasem trwania albumu, więc nie wynudzimy się, nie ma tzw. zamulaczy, więc kontestatorzy death metalu spod znaku –ION, powinni łyknąć „To The Glory Of The Ancient Ones”.
Back in 1998, there was a little Chilean band releasing an album called “The Primigeni Xul (I Condemned My Enemies)” which turned out to be a real gem for early INCANTATION, IMMOLATION worshippers, unfortunately the band’s line-up disintegrated shortly afterwards and personally, I thought, MELEKTAUS (who released a fantastic album in ’04) and to some extent TRIMEGISTO were the successors of DOMINUS XUL. Now, it’s 2011 and the circle closes again, as the Chilean Death Metal act has risen again! Back from the dead, back to deliver deep dark Death Metal! Despite substantial line-up changes (Guitarist Alejandro and ex-guitarist, now vocalist Claudio are the only original members!), maniacs out there – yeah, I’m also thinking of you Hacker, hehe – will be glad to hear, that the quintet still delivers the goods! Though I’m not really happy with the drum sound (the snare lacks punch and sounds a bit washy during the quicker passages) musically the band is better than ever! Focussing on mid-paced, heavily MORBID ANGEL inspired tracks that consume you like a crawling, ancient stream of black matter (e.g. ‘A Tribute To The Real Knowledge’, the second half of ‘The Secret Of Liquid Arcane’) and mixing it with fast, catchy attacks like ‘Time For The Ancient Ones’ while retaining an ominous, unholy atmosphere works just fine. DOMINUS XUL might not overwhelm us with inventiveness yet entertain us perfectly by staying true to the confines of their own style – i.e. they sound f**king old school, you retards! As the record unfortunately kicks off with the only weak track ‘Burying The Holy Lies (Manifesto Of Apostasy)’ and irritated me at first with its imperfect production, “To The Glory Of The Ancient Ones” was not an immediate stunner, but took some to time to grow on me, however it’s a total pleasure now and I’m sure not only Hacker will buy it, hehe!
Dominus Xul is a death metal band from Chile that was formed in the early 90s and released their first album in 1998. Numerous line-up changes and the death of singer Danny Grave lead to the end of this band. He was the only member left from the early days and that was the most important reason to discontinue Dominus Xul and start with another band called Melektaus. Dominus Xul has now been reformed with some of the older members and they recorded a fine album. ‘To The Glory Of The Ancient Ones’ is death metal in the vein of bands like Incantation and Immolation and sounds both heavy and evil. Not really original but that shouldn’t be a problem. I like what I hear and if you appreciate this style I am sure you will like Dominus Xul as well.
Toda una institución del metal nacional puede ser considerada esta banda matriz del death metal de viejo cuño conocida como Dominus Xul, quienes tras una carrera que prometió bastante en la década de los noventas y coronada con la salida en 1998 de su destacado ““The Primigeni Xul (I condemned my enemies)”, su único LP previo a este nuevo disco (aunque ello sin contar sus primeros tapes y demos de comienzos de esa década), la cosa tristemente pintaba para lo peor, aunque eso sí no por motivos musicales, sino más bien anímicos tras lo que fuera la pérdida de un miembro importante como lo era su carismático vocalista Danny Grave (2008), sin embargo por esas vueltas del destino todo pareció finalmente enmendar el rumbo tras la reunión producida en el 2009 lo que concluyó en la posterior composición de nuevos temas y la grabación de este álbum “To The Glory of the Ancient Ones” que en esta oportunidad les ha llevado a fichar nada menos que por la española Xtreem Music, propiedad del mítico David Rotten de los clásicos del death hispano Avulsed y ex dueño también del otrora sello extremo Repulse Records.
El ingreso de Claudio Salinas en la banda no me cabe duda que les ha servido muchísimo para mantener la base del death metal crudo y brutal de Dominus Xul, pues el también frontman de Trimegisto se adapta a plenitud a la línea oscurantista que pretendida por Alejandro Lizana, guitarrista fundador y principal compositor al interior de la banda. Lo interesante de este nuevo disco es que ni por asomo abandona sus ocultistas temáticas y la brutalidad de su particular estilo, continuando en la misma senda marcada por sus trabajos predecesores, esto es ese death metal descarnado e intenso influído por todo lo acontecido en la década de los noventas, particularmente por bandas como Immolation, Incantation y en algo también Morbid Angel, añadiéndose a ello un marcado cariz más doomie en ciertos pasajes que entrega por su parte algo más de profundidad al ya de por sí marcado estilo de nuestros compatriotas. Todos esos elementos en cierta forma se resume en un corte como “Burying the Holy Lies (Manifesto of Apostasy)”, pieza clave para tener el panorama claro respecto a la dirección que tomará en adelante este trabajo.
Lo de ellos indiscutiblemente es un pasión irrefrenable por la brutalidad y la devastación sin tapujos, y en ese sentido Claudio Salinas le da el necesario ingrediente demencial a toda esta nueva entrega con su gutural performance. Ese gusto por mezclar la velocidad típica del death clásico con otros riffs más cadenciosos y arrastrados son sin duda parte esencial de la fórmula de Dominus Xul y por que no decirlo, también sus señales de identidad que te llevan a reconocer de inmediato su sonido. En otro plano de cosas, he de decir también que el sonido está de perilla, profesionalmente logrado gracias al trabajo conseguido en los Estudios Maestro 3 de Santiago.
Continuando con la música, “I Raise Lucifer” contiene también un desarrollo tan macabro como aniquilador en su desarrollo, siguiendo de cerca a los antiguos Incantation, mientras que en “Burying the Holy Lies (Manifesto of Apostasy)” ese misticismo perverso que despiertan las placas noventeras de Morbid Angel se expresa en inmejorable forma, aunque luego en “Time for the Ancient Ones” nuevamente desatan una de sus piezas más blasfemas y despiadadas en términos de melodía. Un regreso triunfal para Dominus Xul, y por cierto que con esta conexión con el sello Xtreem ideal sería que tuvieran la oportunidad de mostrarse por el Viejo Continente, total material de calidad les sobra.
