Hace años que presenciamos la aparición de centenas de bandas jóvenes que recrean el sonido thrasher de los ochentas. Algunas son "del montón" pero otras LOGICAMENTE sin hacer nada nuevo logran resultados FULMINANTES. Cuando escuché un tema de este cuarteto Brasileño (De Belo Horizonte) me caí de culo y ordené el disco. El título es apenas una sutileza de la que te espera en menos de 28 minutos. Diez temas con buen sonido y mucho olor a Kreator/Hypnosia, velocidad en abundancia, riffs filosos y corrosivos (Thiago en voz/guitarra y Ramon en la otra). Y hacía rato que realmente no escuchaba un disco tan palero, agresivo e intensísimo, como ir en un Formula 1 en la recta de Monza fundiendo el motor. Los BPM por momentos se aproximan a los de "Pleasure To Kill" y me atrevería a decir que los pasan. No hace falta mencionar temas, los diez te pasan por arriba. Esta edición incluye el disco en sí más 4 bonus tracks que conformaban su primer demo "Possessed By Thrash". Si lo tuyo es Morbid Saint o el thrash escupido a toda velocidad pero entendible, no te pierdas esta agresión violenta. Muy grata sorpresa.
Brasil y thrash metal es una combinación que ya ha probado ser destructiva (Creo que no es necesario explicar por qué...), y desde las tierras tropicales del futebol, el carnaval y el metal, nos llega este álbum, que en menos de media hora nos da una lección intensiva de thrash old school, de la forma en que (al menos en mi opinión) debe ser ejecutado.
El título de la obra, "Violent Aggression", no podría ser más explicativo del contenido, ya que desfila a una velocidad demente y explosiva a través de los 9 temas de la placa. Ahora bien, me cuesta recordar alguna banda dentro de este tan glorioso estilo que no prometa, desde la imagen, las palabras y la intención, destrucción masiva de todo aquel que se encuentre en el radio sonoro donde suenen sus temas. Pero la realidad es que en varias oportunidades, semejante promesa no pasa del intento y la actitud, y el resultado son músicos repitiendo las formulas que funcionaron tan bien desde hace ya 30 años, pero sin esa explosión que convence, que nos hace vibrar con un riff velocísimo que recorre nuestras entrañas como una descarga de alta tensión.
No es este el caso de DEATHRAISER, ya que los brasileños tocan thrash con el sonido exacto, rabioso, rápido, agresivo, y totalmente convincente. Con guitarras altamente influenciadas por lo más viejo de SLAYER (en especial los solos alternando canales, a pura palanca y vértigo), y una voz al frente, con la presencia necesaria, atacan con el tema homónimo al disco. Sin respiro sigue "Annihilation of Masses", que aunque por momentos pareciera la segunda parte del primer track, tiene un beat de batería tan rápido que causa la sensación de acelerarse a cada momento.
La temática de la muerte se hace presente en "Terminal Disease" , con un gran riff en el estribillo y pasajes instrumentales dignos del "Schizophrenia" de SEPULTURA.
Más liricas netamente thrash, guerra, política, se hacen presentes en "Command to Kill" y "Killing the World" (esta última con un discurso de G. Bush como apertura.), y son recitadas a una velocidad y un ritmo que las convierten en un instrumento percusivo más en el grupo.
El resto de las canciones siguen más o menos por los mismos lineamientos, baterías rápidas, un bajo que sigue a las guitarras hasta debajo de la cama, y estribillos simples, con los coros al unísono tan tradicionales, repitiendo el nombre del tema. Una curiosidad, el tema "Thrash or be thrashed", comienza con exactamente la misma bajada de acordes de "Hallowed Point", de SLAYER.
Como puntos flojos se podría marcar la escasa variación entre tema y tema (lleva un par de escuchas reconocer que no se está pasando 9 veces la misma composición) y, como ya mencioné antes, el abuso del recurso del "estribillo coreado" que repite el nombre del tema. Sin embargo, ninguna de estas cosas logra empañar lo que es un gran trabajo de DEATHRAISER.
Em conclusión, un excelente disco de thrash metal, bien old school, simple, rudo y eficaz, que no debería faltar en la discografía de ningún thrashero de ley.
These thrashers have pay an uncanny homage to Kreator’s ‘Endless Pain’ debut release; this is what you have in these Brazilian speed junkies. It is fair to say that trash of the raw fast style is common place and is in fact much loved in this part of the Southern Hemisphere, quite a few bands bear their souls to this genre but you have to admire Deathraiser’s pure authentic take on a defining classic sound. That said, don’t expect time changes in the former part of this release, they slow down enough for you to catch your breath, pick up your teeth from a moshpit and have just enough time to get in a few headbanging rages. Quite a few of the caffeine machine similarities come to mind, by this I mean Dark Angel, especially when it comes to ‘Enslaved by Cross’, the solo fits the bill perfectly, there is control within chaos. Dave Rotten’s label never releases rubbish, and once again, Deathraiser fit into the labels roster rather comfortably. The execution of the recording is something that cannot be ignored, when music is played at this pace, technical ability is key, much like the days of old, the good bands shine through by way of talent and finger shredding technical ability, this statement holds true for these Brazilian racers.
‘Violent Aggression’ certainly feels like ’85 or ’86, the band don’t try to make something they are clearly not, nor do they present anything different that has not been heard before, but I have to recommend this on the basis that it takes me back to my youth, this is one of those albums that exhumes breakneck speed matched with its accumulation of aggressive tendencies, this is raw and as the closing track states rather effectively it is a case of ‘Thrash or be Thrashed’. The tsunami is coming in musical terms, if you can keep up with this young pack of speed merchants; you are in for a treat.
